Most of it depends on genetics...but try to keep your room 10-15 degrees cooler at your dark period. As i hope you know the purpose of your plant to produce trichomes is to protect it's seed............

From what I've read, its all the genetics of the plant in question but Trichomes aren't the only Cannabinoid that cause the effects we are after...

I will let you in on an old school hippy trick.

flower the last 3 weeks under a MH....
it puts out more UVB than HPS, which will cause the plant to really go nuts on the resin (crystals) production. Contrary to popular belief, the resin glands actually serve a dual purpose a) they produce thc and other cannaboids as natural insecticides, and b) provide "sunblock" for the shade leaves and flowers... the fan leaves (or more accurately the sun leaves) do not need "sunblock" so theres no glands on them.
so increasing the harmful UVB light will cause the plant to produce heavier and larger resin glands, tho it wont necessarily increase the actual thc content/potency, it sure can give your nugs some serious bag appeal.

I just come to the conclusion with out all this fancy stuff to leave well enough alone and let nature run its course. And by doing that I have gotten good results without any interruptions.
