On my first trip over to Amsterdam, I happened to sit next to a nice lady...and we struck up a convo for an hour or so.... anyways..she ends up inviting my wife and I to her house in Northern holland. We showed up 5 days later and enjoyed a fantastic mussel dinner. What took me by surprise was the size of her fridge....tiny...like College dorm tiny. It was then she told me that she eats fresh every day and so does most ppl in Europe. later on we went into a proper food mart and sure enough...the frozen food section was almost non existent compared to ours. Everything was fresh and folks only buy a day or two of food at a time. Now of course they store canned goods like everyone...but the main entrees are usually very fresh...

I only knew one of my Grannies..and she was ultra kewl. She grew up hard scrabble In Nova Scotia and simply was amazing at everything, because of her "can do attitude". Something which surely rubbed off on me.

I can still remember being with her in our little 12 foot dinghy tied up at her dock.... a Mullet flew by (it's a fish which jumps) and she just whipped out and grabbed that sucker like Willie Mays flagging a line drive. Grandma...wth???

Dear....that's dinner...and it was. It was delicious too.

Thats a funny story! I do alot of fishing and flounder giggen myself and I see mullet all the time. They are herbivores tho so you wont catch em with a fish bait. They taste good smoked.

yah... I spent my summers at my grannies house in Florida. We lived up in NJ. My mom and sis would go...and Pop would show up for three weeks, borrow ganpa's car and take us on a vacation within a vacation.

One of my fav things to do was just what you do. We would walk the seawalls looking for that "swirl" and gig 'em. the only doormat Flounder I ever caught was a missed gig on a mullet and I thought the gig sunk into the mud as usual...but instead it harpooned a giant Flounder who must have been very pissed off and surprised.

We would take all of our fish over to a neighbors house who gladly smoked every one we caught.

Thats were I'm from. I cant believe you just dropped the doormat lingo! rep for that. My giggen buddy has his rs so we have no limit. We usually get at least 100 lbs a night in season. The biggest doormat I got last year was a 10 pounder. The big ones fight like bulls. We also gig sheepshead which are good eaten.

Yea they like to lay in between rocks and are allot harder to gig being that there not flat. They will bite the shit out of you too when grabbing them out of the water.

hahahahahaha english people! I just laughed my ass off on that one. They got some pretty stripes but some ugly ass faces. They also love oysters which is the best bait other than green mussels on hook and line.

We went fishing one day when i was in my teens for redfish. We were using small pieces of shrimp to catch the Pinfish...to catch the Redfish with. Well about an hour in we were out of shrmp and out of Pinfish.... bummer.

I looked around and said...i'll be right back. i walked over to a lil general store and bought a can of peas. everyone laughed....at first...until we were bringing in the Pinfish as fast as we could get a pea on the hook and into the water.

We all ate plenty of red for a week. peas....

What made you think to get peas? Thats good it worked. I love To catch reds or any other drum but they dont yield much meat compared to there size.

I was desperate.... it was just lucky. i endured a great amount of snickering....until... MOFO caught a PIN!!! instant hero!

My fav fish to eat was always the trout. We would go to an overhang or a long dock and hang a light about a foot above the water on a moonless night...and wait.... in awhile the baitfish would be swirling underneath...and then wait....in awhile more...the Trout would show up....and it got to the point that a new shiny hook was all it took to catch them...no bait at all. Gut them and cook'em...any leftovers we were paid a dollar a lb with heads at a nearby restaurant.

Stomach full and my pocket full... = fav fish!
