My First Grow. Please comment Good or Bad.

After much thought (and permission from my Wife) I decided to turn the closet in my home office into a grow room.
The room is air and light tight and is approx. 2’ x 2’ x6’ (reflective Mylar lined) with a raised floor (for air intake). I choose to go with a single 400w HID light with MH for veg and HPS for flowering (GYO-2002) controlled by an Intermatic, Digital Time Switch EI500C.
Since these lights put out a lot of heat I installed a Panasonic, FV-05VQ3, 50CFM exhaust Fan, controlled by Line Voltage Thermostat and a glass partition between the light and planters. (The glass partition was not part of the original plan, but during testing I found I needed to isolate the heat to the upper part of the cabinet). I love this fan as it is silent, but would have gone with a bigger one. I’m ok with the 85 degree temp that I can maintain.
Being my first grow I went soil and got some potting soil and 2 - 8” x 8” x 18” planters. I choose 12 seeds to germinate and got 12 to sprout root stem. After planting, 11/12 sprouted.
Here are the results:

LOL yeah i never expected that many to take. I will weed out the weak and the males.

No if they were feminized I would not have done so many

I think your grow room looks really good!

But 11 plants will a be a huge stretch in there unless you plan on growing them SOG style.

And if you are going to so that, get 11 seperate conatainers and chop off every little bud that is not the main cola. You can most certainly get some real nice dank out of your grow space but 11 plants without trimming, clipping, etc. is not such a good idea.

I have 4X the space that you do and I only grow 6 plants at a time.

by the time you can identify males all the roots will be tangled together... might not be very good. but your room looks great!

yeah I was shocked when I got that many, if I keep 3 or 4 I will be lucky.

I have about 32 in my space here and its about 4 times as big as yours and it is not big enough. LOL At least I am moving before I flower and will have a full garage at my disposal. So far they look ok but the issues start about 2 weeks after sprouting depending on experience. Here are some pics of my babies. I have a bit of variety here. Sour Diesel, Green Crack, AK47, White Widow, Fire Kush, Ice, White Rhino, Sensi Skunk, Bubblegum, Kushberry, and Hawaiin Grape. Dont know which will be best but I am guessing that the Ice, White Rhino, Kushberry, White Widow and the AK47 will dominate. Anyways here are some pics you may enjoy because I am ready to start to flower in 14 days baby hehehehe. Also this is my first grow in soil, I was giving nutes every water untill I started to have a Calcium problem but am ok now that I am only giving nutes every 3rd water.

85 is ok for veg but not for flowering you want to be at 70 degrees in flowering to get the best chrystal formation/production.

I think I would agree with some of the comments indicating that the trough may not be the best approach. Now, you say you're an old fart, but I'm 60. I've been growing since 1980, but only indoors the past 8 yrs. I've tried many methods, from DWC, Hempy, to dirt. I'm back to dirt and happy. Anyway, my own experience taught me to use separate containers for the plants. The reasons are many, but essentially you will find your options severely restricted by having them in one box. You may want to rotate, remove, or space your plants differently, but you're locked in if you have them all in one container. You'll see that a grow is not static; you'll want to be able to move them as they change. Perhaps 1 qt containers until they show sex (usually about 6 wks), then see how many fems and move them to bigger pots. Just my thoughts.

@ Barrelhse - Thanks for the feed back. Since this is my first grow I am considering it experimental, so I am not planning on doing anything fancy.

I have some individual containers but I saw these at HD and thought they would be perfect, thats what I get for thinking and shopping while stoned.

My plan was to germinate 12 seeds, plant what sprouted. 12/12 germinated and 11/12 are now little sprouts. I'll weed out the weaklings and planing on going to flower with 4 plants, keeping my fingers crossed that I don't destroy any ladies.

BTW I am keeping the grow room between 81 and 85 degrees and 40% humidity, your thoughts on this.

Ha ha- yeah, it's all trial and error. Sometimes what seems like a good solution has it's own drawbacks, I've tried many that were a FAIL, but live and learn. As for temps, I've always been in a basement area where heat hasn't been an issue. I have a double fan blowing across the tops, keeps it at 80-85 on the tops, but more like 65 on the roots. Your temps should be good, but no higher. Watch for heat stress, wilting, and adjust.
