Metal Halide / HPS at home depot?

I'm a total noob at growing, but I have a seed sprouted and got all the right soil / tending equipment... now I just need a light for a few plants in my closet. I called home depot and they have a few metal halide and hps fixtures for sale there.... is it a bad idea to buy these kind of fixtures? is there a better place to buy these lights? please help I need to plant my seed soon!

Well, your local hydro shop would be a better place, if you have one around you. You'll find a much better selection for your needs and you'll have professionals to answer your questions at your finger tips. If you have the capability to purchase online, ebay has many vendors with great deals and fast shipping.

any opinions on led light setups?

Honestly I think LED is way too expensive for the wattage it provides.. Way better to go with hps/mh considering the $/W ratio.

If your in your closet and new to growing you should start off with cfl's. Those spiral screw in energy saver bulbs. There is a ton of info on the main forum page about growing with cfl's and imho, it is the best way to get your feet wet for a first grow. But be warned...Once you start, you will wanna go bigger, more plants, more lights. It just gets in your blood to try and grow bigger and better plants each time until your sleeping eating and dreaming about your plant(s)

Thanks for the tip... I might just take up your advice on starting with cfl... seems like a cheap way to start... and the seeds i'm starting aren't the best so it will be a good test run. Can't wait to get more into this project!
