What is up with hydroponic store owners asking questions about your personal life???

sup folks,

ive been checking out a few hydro stores lately having a look around you know :P

But the thing I've noticed is that EVERY time I go to one they ALWAYS ask personal questions about what you do etc etc. It's like yeah dude you know what I'm here to grow so shut the fuck up about my personal life. Here's a few examples of kind of what I mean:

Me: Yeah so I don't have much time for riding my dirtbike anymore.

Dude: Yeah that's right because you'd be studying an stuff hey what do you study is it law probably?

Me: (At this stage I laughed because I was high, then..) Na I don't study law.

Dude: Oh yeah so what you studying?

Me: Just doing a local course.

Dude: Yeah, OK, what uni's that at?

Me: Ah just this local one not far from here.

Dude: Oh yeh cool.

Me cutting him off: So anyway you were telling me why LED lights are shit...

----------------------------------------
Different Hydro Shop

Me: Hi, I'm interesting in buying an indoor hydroponic kit for growing herbs for a local restaurant.

Dude: Yeah definitely I'll show you some stuff we've got.

Later on when he tried to sell me his set up he was trying to flog that he knew the most out of anyone in the area and all this shit and how you get the knowledge that comes with it. I'm there smiling thinking yeah fuck you idiot I have RIO I don't need you're advice if you're going to try stiff me. But the point is that he was like "yeah you'll get the biggest buds with me", the other person that was in the shop with me laughed at how obvious he'd just made his appeal.

I dunno it kind of pisses me off that they ask questions about your personal life and size you up like that.

I love RIU because I know I can get sound advice without some dickhead asking questions about it.

What do you guys reckon, is this out of order?

And also what do you reckon of his quote of $2200 for
2 600watt globes with cool tube hoods
carbon filter sock and fan for it with some ducting
8 pots with hydroton with pumps
Nutrients

I thought it was a fucking rip off!! He wanted 400 dollars alone for the pots and pumps. I should have punched him in the face and then run off. Problem is I saw cameras there when I walked in, dodgy hydroponic store fuck.

Anyhoo what advice ya'll niggas have for a nigga who wants to get the shit to grow real cheap in oztraya the beautiful down under land.

Cheers from the nigga downunda

Don't be so paranoid! Any good salesman will, imediately, try to establish a "Bond" with a prospective customer. In fact, the more money that's involved, the more they will "Kiss your ass!". Obviousely, you've never been to a car dealership.

see what happens if you walk into that shop and say quite loudly, what is the best system you have here for growing marijuana.

from what i hear you would get kicked out twice as fast as you came in.

two way system, should work that way both ways.

There is never a need to visit hydroponic shops when you have the internet unless it's an absolute emergency that you need to pay a shop a visit. I've never been to a hydroponic shop. :( What am i saying, it's better that way :)

Where else would you buy nutes? Where else would you buy your lighting? If doing something ore than a cfl set up you kind of have to go there.
Shop local nurseries, Fu*k Hydro shops!

My local nursery carries all the same stuff for a lot less $$$ plus they have the real nutes (not the snake oils sold for MJ)

and get this the folks at the nurseries know how plants grow and will give you honest real answers to grow questions

I'm lucky to be in Colorado where it's legal to discuss things, but seriously check out your local nurseries!!!!!! :bigjoint:

There are hundreds of places online that sell all of those things.. I personally wouldn't mess with a hydro shop unless I was 100% sure they don't work with the cops.. or maybe for soil I guess, seeing that is pretty expensive to ship. Still can get soil from local nursery though.

I purchase everything online for growing but planters. black buckets, jiffy pellets, soil, perlite & vermiculite which I get from a nursery, home depot, the dollar store & walmart. Everything else comes from online. For me it's better that way. I like having a clean conscious. I don't pay an arm and a leg either. Smart shoppers online know how to not get ripped off on items or shipping.

Maybe these hydro folks are smoking some good sativas and can't shut up? Anyway, when I go to the hydro store it like a bunch of robots walking around without any conversation at all! I'm legal so I don't care about someone asking personal questions but fuck, it's like I'm invisible. Their prices are pretty good though so for me it's much cheaper than paying shipping for online stuff.

I buy from hydro stores like riddle says we are patients so it's a little different but still I go there to get something have a look around and I pay with cash and leave. No one ever really bothers me cuz I just tell them I'm browsin and I don't buy huge setups maybe a bag of soil or a pot or something that I couldn't find at the nursery or home depot. Just get it online man 2200$ seems like a lot of money to me I'm sure the guy was just excited at the prospect of making so much money off you but who knows? Buds is used to describe all sorts of flowers so not necessarily just MJ.

Yea don't be paranoid..most shop owners know what most of the people coming through there are growing..especially up here in cali where everyones got their card..they can be a lot more open..if he thinks your cool he'll try to be cool with you..at the end of the day a salesman is a salesman and it sounds to me like he was trying to rip you..hit me up if you need suggestions of where to get good prices or just go to the "best place to go for.." sticky in GR design and setup category

Were you the guy in Highlands Ranch?

Walk into any hydro store in Denver and ask about growing weed and you'll be out the door in 10 seconds flat.

ya i bought everything at a local grow shop. went in there once or twice to scope the place out and make sure it was legit. here in michigan we gotta support our local businesses ya know what i mean? guy was totally legit and i liked him a lot. didn't get pushy or ask me any personal questions. i told him what i wanted and the setup i was going for and he was nice enough to help me pick everything out. never asked me my name, address, nothing. don't even know his name lol. they close at 7 and i got there a little late the other day at 7:05 thinking they closed at 8 but he let me in anyway, killed the lights and helped me pick out my stuff with his dad and allowed us to talk openly. he had great prices and gives a %15 discount on everything in the store. anything he doesn't have in stock he'll get for you within two days as well.

lol and since the shop's on 8 mile the cops don't bother him at all. they're busy with the crack heads and shopping at porno stores. (yes i'm serious, we were all in the store today laughing as we watched a cop on duty run into the smut shop across the street and buy a bunch of shit)

buying online requires a credit card that's got your info all over it. i prefer to take a friends car to the local grow shop and just pay cash. remember cash leaves no trail. plus i like to chat with those guys and get some advice from them while i'm there

btw for you michiganders in the area the shop is HYDRO HEAVEN on 8 mile in southfield. he's got good selection, he's friendly and knowledgeable. support a local business!

no i don't work for them but i am a satisfied customer

your paranoid, most people go to there hydro store every couple weeks. they are just trying to get to know you. the workers at my local quick mart do the same. I would do the same if I worked at a hydro store or any sales job.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I currently have 2 G13 skunks in my closet that are rotting away due to not enough light. They are under one 23watt cfl until i get something from the store.
