Lights on or Lights off?

So I've germinated my seed, and planted it in its 1st container. It hasn't broken the surface of the soil yet, and I was wondering. Should I have the lights on until it breaks the surface, or off?

I've been told off, but I'm not positive. Any help would be appreciated.

you dont need it on unless you need the heat from it or something. But it wont hurt. I keep mine on 24hr just so i dont miss it and the get light as soon as it breaks through. Plus i have plants in various stages from seedlings to clones to mothers in the veg room and they want the light.

Good to know man, thanks. I appreciate the quick response. I think I'll keep the lights off for now just to conserve energy before I switch my lights on for there light cycles.

I'm home alot, so I'll be able to monitor frequently and turn the lights on once it breaks through.

Any idea how long it usually takes to break the surface? At about 10pm pst it will have been in soil for 2 days from germination. I planted about 1/4th of inch deep.

Just depends I think. I just germinated 4 in soil and they took between 3-5 days to break the soil.
I think i like the paper towel method better than just putting the seed in soil. Seems to take about the same time to get a tap root but once you plant it a day later they break soil.

Well I germinated this one with a paper towel and then moved it to its soil. So maybe it's just taking a minute.

Just give it time i put 6 seeds in all at the same time and depth and under the same 24 hr light and all popped on different days and over a 7 day period.
