i was goin to try my hand at breeding and i wanted to know if u can breed a quality strain with a feminised mom? ive heard you might get a hermie prone strain so i want to know if this is correct or a myth! i have a few cross i want to make and dont want to waste my time:bigjoint: thanx for any help in advance!
p.s. if you dont have any experience with breeding please dont reply THANX!

I've had this discussion with a few folks on some other forums.
The underlying principle behind creating feminized seeds is that breeders chemically stimulate a pathway in female plants using gibberellic acid.
This pathway ultimately relieves repression of genes that express the production of male reproductive parts in female plants.
No DNA sequence is modified, thus this change in gene expression caused by the gibberellic acid is not heritable (read:can't cause hermies)
The gametes(pollen) and ovules that are produced by this female plant that has been induced to produce male flowers have only female sex chromosomes and thus all seeds produced by this plant will only have female sex chromosomes and thus be a female plant.

I don't see why not to use a female from feminized seed. An S1 from stable lines will more predictably affect phenotype in a cross since it may be more likely to be homozygous at various loci.

I have yet to see anyone put forth any solid evidence that feminized seeds create hermie prone lines.
The tendency to hermaphrodite to my knowledge hasn't been clearly shown to be directly tied to feminizing.
For all anyone knows, these lines may have hermied without being feminized.

I doubt that all of the top notch breeders would mess with feminizing if it was going to ruin cannabis lines.

I've been curious of this as well War...thanks for creating the thread.

Junocheeba, that is a pretty nice first post! +rep and welcome to RIU!

Has anyone out there actually attempted to breed with fem seeds though? I would like to hear some first hand testimonials...

i did breed a feminized crystals they were female and one went hermi or got some male parts i mated that with a female crystal and got seeds. now i grew 3 of those seeds and there all female untill the end they had like the parts of a male flower sticking though the buds here and there idk that happend to 2 so far i have 1 left thats doing goods so far.so i say they some do have hermi in there dna thats my therey

Well evidence from someone who bred and thinks there is a predisposition to turn hermie. :-P

Case in Point #1 goes to regular seeds.

Regular seeds for sure!:weed:

Just from reading a lot of journals and help threads, it seems feminized seeds in general have a tendency to hermi. Throw in heavy sativa genetics and the % really seems to go up.

I know this is just all ancedotal, but it just seems that most hermi threads have fem'ed seeds in there somewhere.

Just my observation.

I've make seed once using fem seeds, I cross cheese with an auto ak47, we got 60 seeds, and out of the one we have grown, so far no herm's. (we only have 5 left)

I have made some other seed using fem seed, but yet to plant them

I recently chucked some male pollen from a regular Wreckage, onto a femmed Blue Cheese. I'll grow out a few in a couple months, see how it goes.

No offense, but Tbone's "research" isn't really rattling the argument for feminized seeds.
For all you know, he would have hermed out his plants even if they were from regular seeds. A little more evidence should be needed if you want to come to the conclusion that feminized seeds are bad. You guys aren't realizing that regular seeds hermaphrodite as well. Until someone can point me to research growing feminized seeds grown side by side with the unfeminized seeds under exactly the same conditions....I probably won't buy any of the arguments against feminized seeds.

The seedbanks have several reasons to push feminized seeds....firstly being they cost the buyer more therefore there is a larger cash flow and more profit for the breeder or bank....secondly, they are in the business of selling SEEDS, not cannabis and if every Tom Dick and Harry were out there making (and trading, selling) their own seeds, these businesses would soon be out of business. These seedbanks are not the only places capable of throwing together good genetics...most of today's seed banks were started by single individuals who got very good at cross breeding techniques and now they are getting very good at the BUSINESS of keeping these seeds within their control. Yes, it is "nice" to take away some "worry" about whether a male plant will pop up into your grow rooms and "ruin" your girls...but wouldn't it be nice to only have to pay these high prices ONCE instead of every time you want to grow some decent smoke? I say Regular all day...and store up for the future cause if these breeders get their way, their business model will have you begging for seed at their prices for generations to come.

I totally agree with you as far as the seedbanks needing to protect their markets and potential financial security. That is just good business sense and we all would do the same thing if we were in the business. You and I would be right there doing the same marketing.

The thing is that I like to collect my own seeds (vegetables, flowers, trees) so I am going to be doing my own breeding as well. Right now I am just starting so I am buying seeds, but my buying is for the purposes of collecting good genes to use in my own breeding later. Get a few nice strains that are popular. A few that are used in the creation of those popular strains. And then collect up some of the pure Landrace strains from different parts of the world (Asia, Africa, Pakistan, Afghanistan, etc). I know I can learn to do this fairly well and create stuff that I want to have personally. To do it as well as I can I want to have all the skills possible. Making FEM seeds is one of those skills that I want to have in my toolkit. I am spending money now so that I don't need to later.

I haven't read anything yet that has made me believe that FEM breeding increases the chances for hermaphrodites in a strain. The examples I have read about sound like it was already there as a tendency (vulnerability to stress responses) in the regular strain before it was Femmed. I actually am more inclined to believe that the rates are dropping since the breeders are doing more stress testing of the lines they are working on. It is in their best interest to produce strains that are less likely to Herm. They will sell more seeds if they can say they will not Herm under normal growing conditions. As long as you are using stable strains that have been stress tested during their development you should have very little risk of "creating" a FEM version that is going to Herm.

I will not be beholden to any seedbanks for long, but I wont begrudge them their need to make money.

Just to be clear I intend to be using and producing regular and FEM seeds for my own use. Regular for variety of genepool and FEM for personal stash grows. Males are good and necessary for long term breeding, but feminized seeds have their place as well. My personal opinion anyway.

How does feminised seeds protect their gentics? I'm making landrace crosses with feminised pollen this year, the mother plants are regular though as I believe you can find better plants from them. Of course I'll make some regulars too  It's always good having a male around every now and then, I hope to get a red pheno male panama to breed with, panama red x malawi will be amazing!.

To anyone who wants to read it :
The reason i want to use a fem seed to breed is i have two clones that are hands down the best ive had in 3 years of growing. I want to stress one out produce pollon and polinate the other, thus making a fem. Strain. I will grow these out and select the pheno that best suits my needs . But since they are now feminized i have no way to stabilize the strain and keep the pheno i want, so my solution is to keep the pheno i find to be the best and use it as a mother ... im new to breeding or trying to breed ... once i have the mother i am going to introduce pollin from a 3rd strain ( or maybe stress my new creation so it selfs, but i could see where the worrie of a herm comes in at that point) ... does this all sound totaly stupid? Or do u think worth ashot
