Lighting and growing

Hey guys, just a noob with a few questions.

I've just recently run into a few Halogen work spotlights. They are something like 150-250W. Now I know from experience, you need lots of light to get a good pot plant. Now my question is; will I be able to use 1 or 2 of these lights to grow a couple plants? My grow room will be my closet which is about 5' x 2'.

In case you aren't aware of what these lights look like, I have provided a picture below.

my first instinct is no.
i dont think that flood lights have the right SPECTRUM
to rele grow plants. just my $0.02

that kind of light is very bad because the wavelength of light is not ideal for pot and it gives off more heat compared to other lights. you can use it for pot but you're not going to get much from it.

you want to use either cfl (compact flourescent light) or hps (high pressure sodium) lights.

Worthless. They create tons of heat and almost no usable light for the plant. Spend a 150 bucks and get a 250 hps. Use 2x2 for a flower area and the rest for veg and supplies. Keep it simple to start.

And Rat is right. Get some CFLs at the very least. Getting both you will be able to veg and flower a few quite easily with your space. Simple nutes and some good soil. Ya baby.

I have a 500w halogen w/ cfl that i'm going to use on my grow (will be my first). I read online that they give off red spectrum and thus would be good for flowering stage, but i'm only going to run itfor 5 mins twice an hr to keep heat down. but more opinions and advice would be nice thanks.

repeat after me - halogen lights are worthless - halogen lights are worthless - halogen lights are worthless - go out and get more cfls

try it your way, just dont be supprised when it doesnt work. Time is worth a lot more then a couple of bucks you will soon find out. Good luck

alright well i'm convinced, gonna ditch the halogen and double up my cfls, plus 500watts draws almost 5 amps and when ur only on a 15 amp circuit thats a lot...anyways thanks for info
