Can I do this?

Almost all of the ways i see people using inline fans they have them in the actual ducting. If i get a reflector with a glass cover for my 400w hps can i just put the fan right on the reflector blowing right on the lamp and run ducting out the room? I have read that it's more effective to pull the air from the light rather than blow air on it? That doesnt sound right. The exhaust ducting wouldn't be more than 4 ft long if it matters. See my crappy computer drawing. Also i dont plan on using any carbon filter or anything. I'm not worried about the smell.

you can do it that way but

- its harder to seal the connection
- it makes it harder to raise and lower the light

I see...Is my idea any more effective though? I would imagine that the longer the ducting that the air has to travel through the less powerful the wind will be. I am very concerned about the heat and I don't have a lot of space for ducting and such but if it's a major pain in the ass to attatch the fan to the hood I might have to figure something out. I'm concerned about noise and I've read that 8" fans make less noise than 6" fans and move more air but that sounds like it takes up room.

a couple of feet of ducting is not going to effect a good online fan. i'd go with the 6" fan and ducting and get a variable speed controller. you can dial down the rpm to make the least noise with sufficient cooling. you can also get a duct muffler to further reduce the sound.

best set up - air filter at top of room - direct connect to fan - ducting from fan to light - ducting from light to outside. then you can have your light on adjustable chains to keep it close to the plants top.

I was running an 1100W Portable A/C unit with my 400w HPS with a bat wing, now I run 1000W HPS with inline fan long story short my room is cooler and my electric bill is lower :)
