Mr Obvious says: the sun!

Or go on craigslist and look for good deals on HPS lights like security lights and things like that.

The real answers to your questions depend on what your goals are for harvest, how many plants are you growing, etc. Give us as many details as possible.

you need a ballast too, but without knowing how many and where they are being grown, can't really give a propper diagnoses

Before I found a cheap light on CL, I spent about 2 weeks casing a good light to rip off from somewhere....even made an attempt once, but was thwarted by the strength of steel

he means like how big you want them to grow or how long, or what your ideal yield would be

im sure you would be happy with what ever you got, so just remember; the more light the better

For a worthwhile yield on 3 plants, you might be able to get away with a 150 watt HPS if you keep an even canopy. Best deal I found on one online is from HTG, $90 shipped. You can likely find one locally on the cheap via CL if you are patient and lurk and use the right keywords.

Or, use a shitload of CFLs, maybe 100 actual watts or so on each plant. That might run about $60-$80 all said and done (maybe a lot less if you are a good scrapper). The upside to this is that you can lkely find all that locally very easily.

That is what I believe should be the minimum to get anything worthwhile. Although people have certainly made due with less sometimes!

Yea you realize that you have to buy a Ballast and a Hood for that bulb right? (which are the expensive parts) You can't just plug it inot any socket... I wish it was that easy! ;-)

lol, go with CFL's bro, easiest/least expensive way! I spent a total of $17 on this light set up (not including lights) the light's we're about $24. For my veg box.

Check it, this may give you and Idea of what you can do. Just remember...
"Home-De-Pot" Is the shit! It's where I get EVERYTHING!

(The last 2 pix is just a hood I built for my Flower room)

:arrow:Hope this helps!

sigh...

you dont need a damn hood. especially for only 400w.

you only really need a hood when you have low overhead clearences that trap heat, like in cabs... OR if your running multiple lamps in a small enclosed space like an attic, or where temps are an issue.
ive been growing for over a decade, prolly harvested over 75-100lbs over the course of that decade, and have never once used a hood.

but then again i also know alot about lighting ;)
