hps veg. question

Hey guy's I was just wondering if I used 400 hps watt to veg. will it have the same result as mh? since i dont have a hole lot of cash for both lights

No. HPS won't give you the same results as a MH for veggin, It will work tho.

As he said, it will work, but if you go that route i would reccomended getting a bulb thats spec. enhanced for more blue, you'll get better results. Or a conversion bulb but you are getting about ~20K less lumens this way.

thanks russor I see u have a 45 watt cfl so i guess thats what I need How many do I need for four plants and what will happen If I contiue to use hps for veg.

right now 3x3 but I know it will have to get bigger since i plan on put them in five gallon buckets and lettin them get to veg. abouth two feet

3x3 is more then enough space to vegg 4 plants. I vegged 5 plants under 5 45w cfl's with no problems in approx same space.

Most ppl will start flowering before they get to be 2ft, i think that's to tall. correct me if i'm wrong people.

5 45watt cfl's emits around 14,500 lumens. (@ 2900 lumens per bulb)
a 400w metal hailde (mh) emits 36,000 lumens.

so not exactly, but there are things you can account for... a mh produces heat and must be kept farther above, reducing lumens. with 5 cfl's you have 5 points of light to play with so your plant can get very even lighting, and you can get them much closer, about 1 inch or 3 cm.
