Thinking of switching from 1 1000w to 2 400w

I have a 1000w HPS setup that a friend is letting me borrow, I was thinking about getting 2 400 watters, and giving my friend back his light, I know I'll lose some wattage, but I figure being able to put the lights where I want them ought to make up for it.

Am I thinking right?

I asked around, and found out the more efficient setup would be 2 600w lights, and it won't cost a whole lot more to buy. :bigjoint:

But it will cost half again as much to operate as two 400 watters. Do you really need (or want) that?

What really makes the difference is the size and shape of your grow space. If your space is about 3'x6', two 400 watters should work fine (and operate a lot cheaper!). If your space is roughly "Square" and about 4 1/2' x 4 1/2', you might want to consider four 250 watters (the same wattage as you're using now, but with incredible coverage!). A single 1,000 watter actually "loses" so much of it's power to distance traveled that you'd be much better off with smaller lights distributed closer!

Most people wouldn't be too happy exchanging a 1k for two 400's. Some would do it for two 600's, depends on the grow style though and your space. Buy the right light for your space.

My flowering space is going to be 4x8, so 2 600s should do me just right.

Mine is 4x4 and im gonna have 9 autoflowers in lines of 3... I was planning on having one 400 watt mh/hps. Would that be good enough considering the average height of the autoflowers wont be any higher than 12-14 inches tall.

Right now I'm doing 15 autos under 1 1000w HPS, I already bought one 600w setup, ordering another in the next couple months, by the time all my autos are done, then it's regular strains under 1200 w, aiming for 18 plants, mostly 12/12 from 2 weeks old, but I'm going to veg some photo strains out with the autos once I weed out my males.

I am actually in the same process..

dumping my 1k and switching it up for 2 600's to cover a little more space.. (3' x 8') and am looking for one of those single digital or magnetic ballast with 2 hoods...

still in research mode..
