Hang filter from ducting??

Hi folks,

I have a 170 cfm 4 inch exhaust fan and am thinking about buying a corresponding carbon filter. I'm wondering, how heavy would such a filter be? Is it possible to just clamp it to the duct that hangs from my fan and have the metal ducting support the weight of the filter? I'm sure I could rig up a support for it, but the advantage of having it hanging is that all the surface area is free to intake air. Anybody tried free hanging a carbon filter from flexible metal ducting? Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

bro u should make a cheap DIY carbon filter, that u can attach, and it will be light, 1-2 lbs max

I have 2 chains running side by side at top of room, then using bungee cord I have a can 33 carbon filter and a 6" inline fan all hooked up to chain via Bungee cord. One year later all is well.

Yeah? IDK I was under the impression that the DIY ones didn't really work that well. The ones I've seen so far look like they'd either suck, or be so complicated to make that it wouldn't be worth it to save the 20 bucks or whatever. Do you have a good one that you could point me to? I'd really appreciate it cause I've spent enough money already. I'd just want to be sure that it would work with my fan and stuff. Thanks for the suggestions guys,

Simple simple DYI carbon filter. Get activated charcol from a pet supply store. The smaller the particles the better. Make little pillows out of the charcoal by putting it into some stockings. Be sure you tie them closed nice and tight. Stuff them into a square gutter pipe and attach your fan to one end. You will need another fan of the same strength on the other side so the air flow goes in one fan and out the other. Seal it with duct tape. Essentially you want to force the air thru the pillows of charcoal.

This is just a quick description. You can use a heavy cardboard box, or a rubbermaid container, or whatever. So long as the air is forced to pass thru the pillows.

thanks for the tip, that one sounds really easy. I actually made one today. Took a few hours to get all the supplies and a while longer to actually construct it, but I think it's gonna be great. It looks just like the pro ones. Here's the link to the tech i used.
