what would you do if you were ordered by your commanders to take up position in your own country against your own citizens?

I would follow my conscience and my oath to defend the constitution and take the consequences.

Edit/Clarification : No, I would not. The constitution and the people come before any elected politician and their will.

I suppose under most circumstances with an educated and well disciplined regular military, one that is not immersed in the power structure of the government, this would not happen. Under the condition that the order was given by the head of the armed forces ( the president in the US ) , I believe that the order would never come down to the individual soldier .. that someone high up in the officer ranks will take the action of disobeying an unlawful or unconstitutional order. Then what happens ?

My questions would be :
What circumstances would cause the military in general to break from the government ?
Under what conditions is the military constitutionally obligated to act independently ?

something to think about ..

not in the military but am really against anyone or group forcing their will or ideas on anyone, thats the problem here in the U.S. Our government is sending their Police soldiers to force us citizins to do as they say and not as they do...its corrupt and unjust, if we cant take care of our own people here why are we trying to police the world and attempting to micro manage civilians.

As a Marine or any military service member you take the oath to protect against foreign or domestic blah blah blah, But if something were to break out , like in Iran for example, Non lethal force would be in effect AT ALL COSTS. With all the policies that regulate the military, that "order" would never make it down to the boots. So honestly an order to attack unarmed innocent Americans would never happen. But IF something like this WERE to happen, don't think for one second any of you would have a chance lol. Best bet would be to get the hell out of the country. You could put a squad of trained Marines against a hundred of your untrained "gun nuts" and the Marines wouldn't get so much of a scratch. Just my two cents!
like waco?

A big chunk of the puzzle you missed is that many of us "gun nuts" are trained by the military - granted I wont enjoy the company of a squad, but I do know the strategy of harass & fade away.

I would like to know the definition of a "gun nut".
That's what they call us citizens who believe in the basic right to preserving life and property.
The great object is that every man be armed. Everyone who is able may have a gun. ~ Patrick Henry, "Gun Nut"

That's why I specified "untrained" gun nuts lol. Ex military would know better to take arms against active lol, at least I would hope so. But shit if it goes down , hit me up and will run a little echelon hahahaha

It would have to be guarrilla, but folks underestimate the public. We have skills also, and could be a real thorn in the side if prevolked. In oklahoma we would not roll over!

It might be a thorn in the ass but civilians would have absolutely no chance.

You can't take on the military like in the civil war days, it's not gun vs gun any longer we have all those nice smart bombs, armed predator drones, and flying gunships. Trained or not, without the big equipment civilians couldn't win.

It's supposed to be our job to support and defend the constitution of the united states against all enemies "foreign and domestic" first, following the orders of your commanders is secondary.

Conflict could easily happen again, it's no less of a divided oppressive society today than it was back in the 60's. We have the bible thumpers vs the educated ready to have another civil war for control of this country. We also have states that are talking about going independent lately and that's all you'd need.

History always repeats itself.

I forgot about those - imagine if "Oddjob" from the early James Bond movies had one of those? I mean he cut the head off a granite statue with a bowler for crying out loud.
