Veteranwhat would you do if you were ordered by your commanders to take up position in your own country against your own citizens?
....
I would follow my conscience and my oath to defend the constitution and take the consequences.
Edit/Clarification : No, I would not. The constitution and the people come before any elected politician and their will.
I suppose under most circumstances with an educated and well disciplined regular military, one that is not immersed in the power structure of the government, this would not happen. Under the condition that the order was given by the head of the armed forces ( the president in the US ) , I believe that the order would never come down to the individual soldier .. that someone high up in the officer ranks will take the action of disobeying an unlawful or unconstitutional order. Then what happens ?
My questions would be :
What circumstances would cause the military in general to break from the government ?
Under what conditions is the military constitutionally obligated to act independently ?
something to think about ..
