Don't use dirt use soil

If you want the best taste use soil very forgiving for a 1st timer

Get quality soil, do not use scott's or miracle grow

Use some Pro Mix and add guano and some blood meal and other items the plants need during the growing cycle depending on what you want to do veg and flower or just flower right away

Do some reading and find out what looks like it will work for you, there is a lot of good and bad knowledge here good luck

+1 for plain promix. It works great for seedlings and clones because it's almost nutrient free.

Foxfarm ocean forest is twice the price when compared with a big bale of promix, but it has ferts already mixed in so might be a time saver/safer for a new grower (once you are past seedling stage)

If you water with tap water, let it stand for 24 hours to evap the chlorine. This will help preserve the soil ecosystem in an organic soil grow. Good luck!

I vote HYDRO.

Runs on autopilot, requires less space, plants grow better, budz grow better. Some people prefer the taste of dirt, some like hydro, some can't tell the difference.

The cost to set up is probably higher with hydro, but it's cleaner and better. Just depends on how big of an operation you want to set up imo.

Soil, tast's better. And if you've never grown before... A lot less can go wrong. IMHO... I've never grown Hydro, it is faster tho. What you really need to do is ask yourself how much you want to spend? How fast you need bud? And are you willing to sacrifice taste for a faster, and good chance of a larger yield?.. Still, I'd grow soil.

For a first timer use Mirical Grow 3 month feed soil. A 20% perlite mix. So all you have to do is PH your water. PH between 6.0 and 7.0. Your first watering should be just a bit higher around 7.5. That is the one and only time you use a PH that high. Mirical Grow has a low PH so this will help your baseline soil PH. DO NOT OVER WATER.

Don't mater what you start with if you do the research. they both have there own set of rules. I started in soil play with dwc bubbles and grow in a coco blend now. coco acts alot like hydro.

Do a LOT of research and find a journal that is doing the kinds of things you want to do. You can find enough information on RIU to grow completely crazy! Learn before you spend and you won't be sorry.

Hydro has its advantages, and soil has its advantages. As most have already said, soil is forgiving, and hydro is quick. I'd say go Hydro-DWC. Very simple to make/understand. Whichever one you decide, make sure you have done your research, and get some good lights.

Just about everyone at RIU can give tips. There are a few guys here that know there stuff up and down. I'll see if I can find the good Doc's 101 thread and link it.
