you need proper lighting and use a good bloom permoter a couple weeks b4 switching over to 12/12. light to close will just hurt your buds badly, its the heat that kills.

Depends on the light. CFL's don't penetrate so you need to be close to the light source. This is typically safe because CFL's don't put out much heat, but use the hand rule for placement. HID has better lumens so better light for the plants, but they are hotter and can damage plants. You need to keep that in mind when adjusting lights. Rock hard buds come from proper light coverage. Streaching, and airy buds come from not enough light. You need to also be in tune to the plant. Fuck sun leaves!!! Don't cut them because they serve a purpose, but tuck them out of the way of branches. Nodes produces bud, NOT leaves. If a sun leaf is blocking a branch then it does not get the light needed to bring it to the top of the canopy to produce bud.
thanks all it is supposed to be a 600w h in a small grow cabnet but i just can't get the buds dense and i do use an air conditioner it blows on or at the intake fan i use fox farm big bloom an tiger bloom the light is about 31 inches above the res. so what do i need to do

also what type of temps, and humidity are you getting in there. That might be some of the problem too.

what a ridiculous statement!!!!! What if his growing environment is at the optimal temps for growing? Adding an air conditioner would upset this. In that case what should he do, add a heater? sheesh...
Anyways, like other people here have said, it's all about the lumens. You want your lighting to penetrate as deeply in to the plant as possible. So, the better lighting you have, the more dense your nugs should get (as long as you are using your lights effectively. i.e. where you place them, how close/far to the plant, mylar to catch stray light, etc...).
Strain also plays an important part. So I hope you have a good one growing. And like one other guy mentioned, it's always good to understand proper use of nutrients, especially during flowering. Good luck to you.
I attached a couple pics of what my girls are looking like about 1 month in to flower. This strain produces very dense buds in the end. It's white rhino. It is flowering under 400W HPS.

thanks again all ! very nice snutter genetics nirvana bubblelisus,temps and humidity are right ph is good not sure i useing the right amout of nuts also if my light is close enuff mine is 31 inches away at start of growth i let the plant grow up to the light because i haven't figured out how to move the light up and down yet it is mounted at the top of the cabnet in side of glass panel.i bought it from a company that built it then shiped it. do i need to get the light closer?
well if his growing op was at the perfect temps, then guess what, HE WOULD HAVE DENSE NUGGETS.
obviously its too hot in there. How in the world is saying get an air conditioner to cool hot temps from lighting anywhere's near saying add a heater?
You're right a tiny 400w doesn't need an A/C. You can usually vent it just fine with fans. And the temps are fine.
a 600w, you better have a nice ventilation system into a different room.
I speak of my experience from using a 400w, 600w, and 400w and 600w together, a 1000w by itself, and now for the first time going to try two 1000w hps. I have been lucky enough to have all these things handed to me throughout a course of time. I don't have the extra money to get the perfect enclosed ballasts and enough ducting to run everywhere to vent the hps. An A/C is a way more common tool in a house than all that ventilation equipment for lights...at least for me.
An A/C is ridiculous .... seemed to work miracles for me...and i see it in MANY professional grow ops. Its in many books that i've read, that it's well worth the investment, you must weigh the benefits against cost.

wait it is in jorge cervantes Marijuana Horticulture: The Indoor/Outdoor Medical Grower's Bible , that must must of been ridiculous too then.
you need to tell us what lights you are running for your flowering cycle. 400w, and 600w can be relatively close to the plants if the ventilation and temp are correct. a 1000w is where you need it to be 30 inches away or so...

yes he is right. as for you can get the 400w inches away which gives you WAYY more lumens.
I have only ever been handed 1000W. Lol, literally, there are 3 of them. I would love 3 400's instead

ok, with 600w then you should get rock hard buds then. you can keep the light pretty close on that as long as..
like snutter said and triniman said, its all about the nutrients in flowering and using the Open Sesame, Beastie Bloomz, and Cha Ching definitely help with attaining rock hard buds. And as triniman said, 75-76 in the day, and 65 at night.
