4" DIY cooltube and centrifugal fan enough for 600w hps grow tent?

I've got a 150w hps grow in a little cabinet about a week or two from harvest and I want to step things up a bit for the trainwreck that I just sprouted. I'm looking to turn the cabinet into a veg room and an appropriately sized tent into a flowering room but I am debating whether I want to put a 400w or 600w hps in it. Ultimately it will depend on my budget but I am wondering if a 4" 170 CFM centrifugal fan and carbon filter hooked to a diy cooltube setup would be adequate for a 600 watter? If this won't work, is it the restrictive 4" ducting and cooltube or is it the weak fan? Essentially, I just want to know if the fan and tube will be fine or if I need to go 6" all the way or just go 4" and use a 400 watter. +rep for some good help!

yup. I use the same fan on a 6" tube with a 600w and its fine, a smaller tube should just cool slightly more efficiently because of lower air pressure, but less air will move through it so it is not as good for ventilating.

a 170cfm centrifugal fan is by no means weak, once you buy it you will see. what is your budget?

+rep. I appreciate your input and what you are saying makes sense.

I don't have experience with centrifugal fans so when I saw 170cfm on the 4" vs. 450cfm on the 6", I assumed it wasn't that strong. Good to know that they throw a little more air than my little PC fans. lol.

In terms of budget, I am trying to keep the light, tent and ventilation under $700 and looking by looking at the prices, I think it is easily possible. I've been looking at htgsupply's 56x56x78 tent and it looks really nice and affordable. Anyone have any input on this or any other suggestions for a 600w setup?

You should be good! If you look on ebay you can find a tent that is approximately the same for half the price. also ebay has very cheap 400-600W setups with MH and HPS in the 150-250 range. I think like 230 for a cooltube 600w or a little more for a better air cooled hood 600w

plantlightinghydroponics.com is the cheapest deal on the fan for about $80-90 shipped but I donno if I would order there again getting my stuff from them was a terrible ordeal... they sent the wrong package and never completed the order x.x I e-mailed them a plethur of times they told me they mailed it to me twice and I never got it, and I know they didn't mail it because I got what they mailed.. anyways tangent...

yea you should be lookin at about

tent 150-300
ac light 150-300
fan 100

so your budget looks good

this guys items are pretty good. not as high quality as the more expensive stuff but functional and cheap. I wouldn't buy the light kit unless you get it real cheap... I got a 400w system for $140 mh/hps... good deal; 600w ballast $120, 400w ballast $103... good deals on ballasts but the bulbs are generic and the hood sucks.

Damn, good looking out! I really appreciate all the info. I'm not so sure about the tents that gyo guy is selling because they look cheap and don't have enough vents. I did find some nice looking tents in a better assortment of sizes on ebay for pretty cheap, so I may end up going that route. Cheaphydroponics.com also has a nice Homebox XL that is the size I'm looking for. Anyone have any input on tents of a 4x4x7 size?

I have known about plantlighthydroponics.com for a while now and their prices seem good but I've never ordered from them. I may use them in the future but your story makes me weary. I like htg's deal on the 4" fan and filter combo and I already know they have great customer service, so I'd rather go there.

So in a nutshell, here's what I'm thinking...

-lumatek dimmable 600w ballast from cheaphydro.com -$180
-homebox xl from cheaphydro.com -$205
-4" fan/filter combo from htgsupply.com -$120
-shipping -$55
-already have the bake-a-round for diy cooltube
-total- $560...well within budget

I'll also need misc shit like a mogul socket, a hps bulb, ducting, light hangers but this should be well within my budget, right?

Smaller mom and pop hydro shops tend to have lots of used gear laying around. I buy all kinds of stuff used. Just call them and see what they got.

Good idea. I'll go to the stores around town and see if I can find any deals. It would be nice to save on shipping costs if possible.

So here is the list of stuff online for my new setup. I managed to keep it under $570 and also managed to squeeze in a 600w bulb and 600gph air pump for a dwc setup to put in the tent. All the rest of the stuff is small stuff that I can buy at the hydro store.

Homebox XL "seconds" from ebay: $175 shipped
4" Vortex centrifugal fan from ebay: $130 shipped
600w hps bulb from ebay: $30 shipped
600gph air pump: $35 + shipping
600w Lumatek ballast from cheaphydro.com: $179 + shipping
Shipping cost from cheaphydro.com: $20
Total: $570

Anyone have any comments about my plan? I didn't find any deals locally, so I'm going to be ordering this stuff at the beginning of the year.
