It does block the light. I would only consider this heat shield as a last alternative. You're better off using glass as a shield and an exhaust fan to move the hot air above the glass shield out of the grow room entirely. There are reflectors that won't cost much more and are built to include a glass heat shield and a port to mount a ducted fan.
