PPM meter???

I was recommended this meter, by a friend.

Does this look like a good choice, to you guys? I like that its hand held, and I figure that since it cost double what a cheapy EC/ppm meter cost, ...its got to be decent, right?

Im a newb, and this will be my first meter.

Any opinions would be appreciated. Can you guys at least tell me if this is the correct meter?

Ive looked at some other ones, and they say "PPM meter" on them. But isnt Total Dissoved Solids measured in ppm?

ya that is a good meter its price tag reflects its quality you might as well spend $120 on the combo meter it does pH too.

Com 1 is a great meter for the price. $55 on amazon. Buy it and a Hannah pH for $30 on ebay.

I just read one of Roseman's replies to the thread "Why do a water change?", and he referred to "TDS" as being "Total dissolved salts" and not "total dissolved solids". This meter reads EC and TDS.

So, does this meter measure PPM or the ammount of salts?

TDS is total disolved solids. It will measure ppms and it is what you want.

123, with that meter, you needn't concern yourself with PPM - that meter measures EC, which is superior to PPM.

Do a search for a better explanation, but keeping it brief, EC is the same as measured by anyone, but PPM can vary (depending on the conversion factor used in the meter).

Long story short, your meter lets you simply work in EC, which is a good thing.

The advantage of working in ppm and knowing the conversion method, is that nute manufacturers give you the ppm equivalent of various feeding levels (using their conversion) and so you can monitor it. I don't know that I've ever seen feeding charts expressed in EC.

Ohhhhhh, ...nice. I had no idea. I'll have to figure out how to measure my nutes with this this. I think figuring this out will probably be most challenging for me.

I just got the meter in today, ...and its neat! This shit is all high tech for me. Hopfully I'll be able to produce some high tech buds!!!

IMO, you sort of have to make a decision whether to trust your nute company or the meter more. Some will say - I need x ppms so I'm going to keep adding nutes until this meter reads that. Whatever. I figure if I don't trust my nute company on nute levels why am I using it. So if my nute company says for such and such week I should have x mls of each nute per gallon, I do that (in ro water) and take a reading. Whatever the reading is I assume THAT is correct, whether it reads 400 or 900. Differences in how meter convert EC to ppm vary and if you aren't using the same meter as your nute co then their ppms aren't the same as yours. Confused yet?

Makes sense. I reckon I'll do like the nutes recommend, at first, ....and see how that works. Ive read good stuff about this Fox Farm stuff I bought. So, they MUST know whats up.

I have used a $30 HANNAH I got on eBay my last 2 grows and it works great. Since you need to replace the probe from time to time, on all of them, when my $30 meter fails, I'll just buy another HANNAH.
