A new(ish) way to make a cool tube

I have tried it on beer bottles, and it works (and is a lot of fun!). I plan on making the glass cylinder for a cooltube I will be building and will let you guys know how it turns out. All the other hurricane glass they had at Michael's was too small or oddly shaped. This method allows me to use a much cheaper and perfect sized vase and just slice the bottom off. Wish me luck!

I see a way to win a few bucks on a bet at the local bar:

"I bet I can cut this beer bottle in half with the string"

Cool vid thanks JR

The sharp edge will be covered by a piece of metal to which I will attach a PC fan to blow air back through the tube, over the light, and down into the carbon filter.

And honestly. only a 10% of the perimeter comes out sharp, and I bet there is some way to sand that down. I haven't looked into that yet though as it is non consequential in my particular setup.

Pictures upcoming.

glass vases and beer bottles can be very different. Im sure it can be done. It might take a few different types of vases.

More to come once I figure out how to upload better. Here is me doing the interesting part for now ...
Go on ebay and search "Pyrex Bake-A-Round" Tube its a perfect tube for the cooltube for 3 reason, 1 its the perfect shape and size, made to be heat resistant (ment to cook bread) and 3rd and most important and the sole reason you shouldnt use a vase: It is Pyrex, a special glass that trasmits 100% of the UV rays which increase crystal formation drastically, Normal glass blocks UV completely and distorts lightwaves depending on the thickness and shape, Pyrex is whats used in commercially sold cooltubes for this reason.

Here is a good tutorial if your interested

Damn, I never thought of that. I'll have to do some testing to ensure safety now and hope this glass does not block too much of the light. Good info and +rep.

I simply did not want to spend the extra money or wait two weeks for a pyrex bake a round, which I could only find online. I thought this was a cheap and fun workaround. I will see how results go and by a bake around if need be.

If you live in the US, getting hold of a Bake a-round is pretty simple. If you're from the UK you're going to have problems. The only place I could find them was on ebay, but the shipping cost about £35 pounds.

I went this route because ~$30 was the cheapest I could find one total with shipping and I did not want to wait for it to be shipped. This was a fun little workaround. Now I just hope the glass doesn't block/mess with the light.

Has anyone ever had a Bake a Round break on them because of heat??

I was doing a test on my DIY Cooltube with a 400W HPS bulb and my glass broke!!

Has this ever happened to anyone?? I didnt have my fans running with it, so Im guessing that's what did it..

its the temperature difference, outside the tube is cold inside gets hot, or it was faulty maybe damaged during shipping, as far as i know Pyrex has warrenty on that kinda thing, but maybe if you told em you were usin it to grow dope they might not be so understanding lol

i like the beer bottle trick, and you just use an emory pad to sand the edges down, or a rough stone and some oil, or even course grit sandpaper and oil

pyrex made to with stand heat . reg glass not really made to with stand that much heat. if the cool tube fails (no air flow) the glass will bust the pyrex will just get hot you might melt wire and socket after a while
