430w or 1000w hps for 5x5 ft growroom?

you double the volts. you cut the amperage in half. People say 240v is better for the ballast and i agree with that. It really comes into play when you have multiple ballast..

There is debate on this issue. This is my understanding.. amps x volts =watts...we are charged for watts so that would mean there is no difference.. right? But the 240 has less of a voltage drop..therefore it should be more energy efficient to run 240..but wait , it depends on the gage/type of the wire too http://www.rhtubs.com/voltage-drop_conduit-fill.htm
An example is : Running 120V over 100 feet of 14AWG at 15Amp gives you a voltage drop of 9.1 Volts, where as running 240 over the same wire gives you a drop of 4.6volts.
Here is a caclulator - http://www.rhtubs.com/voltage-drop_conduit-fill.htm

Yah it all depends on the wiring.. if wired properly, 240v is more effecitent but cost more in supplies by far

I use sunnlight supply hoods with fans no heat problem here. The cool tubes had fans on them when they smoked bulbs early.I have sungrow and super sun hoods with glass and fans.I just assumed that when you install glass you know you need a fan

OK..I'll split the difference with ya...you made me take my high ass down stairs and check..

here ya go
110 - 9.5 amps
240 - 5 amps

see pic
Perfect, thank you. I just wanted to make sure because with the numbers you posted it would be easy to see that 120v would stomp the 240 originally. I wasn't trying to be a stickler or a dickhead, just wanted to confirm the #'s so I can decide if it's worth it to go 240v. The only reason I can see to go 240v is if you are going to run more lights. 2x1000w on the same circuit at 240v is a lot safer than 2x1000w @ 120v. The wiring stays cooler and I would just feel a lot more comfortable with it setup that way.

so you need a fan for a reflector with glass? and why is a relector with glass better?

It spreads the light evenly over the canopy and a good grower will increace their yield 20% with a good reflecter compared to the tubes...Peace

A reflective hood with glass is basically the same thing as a CoolTube in that the bulb is enclosed and fresh cool air continually passes through the CoolTube/glass enclosed reflective hood taking its heat out and keeping the grow room temperatures lower.

There are reflectors for CoolTubes, some come with them and they can be very effective so it is not like someone is giving up light reflectivity if they pick a CoolTube. They just have to pick the right CoolTube setup.

I once read in a thread where some guy claimed to put anon-reflected CoolTube into a pebble finished aluminum reflective hood and claimed it worked great and said he loved it.

If he did it or not I cannot swear but as is said, there is more than one way to skin a cat.

If you do not believe that just ask anyone who has ever worked in a Chinese restaurant.

I am doing a 1000 watt in a xxxl air cooled hood in a 5 x 5 tent. temps never get above 75. doing 7 agent orange bushes and they look great! week four of flowering starting on this thursday. air cool your hood and run the bigger lights ! You will be pleased

In his message he answered the very question you then asked him.

He said; "air cool your hood and run the bigger lights ! You will be pleased" and you then asked; "do you need fans for the reflector?"

Do you know of a way to "air cool your hood" (reflector) without "fans?"

Like I previously said; "A reflective hood with glass is basically the same thing as a CoolTube in that the bulb is enclosed and fresh cool air continually passes through the CoolTube/glass enclosed reflective hood taking its heat out and keeping the grow room temperatures lower."

oooh haha i wasnt payin too much attention :-? so would I need a 6" inline fan? for a 6" air cooled reflector that is

I just picked up Two 25" x 22" hoods with 8" ducting. They were $119 each. I think I got a small discount of that price but that was the sticker. I like the fact that the glass hinges. It can't fall off when you open it to change bulbs. These hoods will be used to cover a 4' x 8' tray. I'm running one 450 cfm fan to suck the heat out. It think it's gonna work bitchen.

I'll check the brand for you. With one light and in that space I think a larger hood with 6" ducting is fine. 1000w for sure.

I have yet to install the gear. Just picked it up on Friday. Yes, my fan will be sucking out all the air through 8" ducting. The total run is about 11ft. I'm sucking air from outside, through ducting, through the lights then out of the fan. I'm not sucking any air out of the room with regard to my lighting. Air from outside being sucked through all the ducting and back to outside. Not that odor matters to me, but I won't be exhausting any ganja scent with this set up.
