250w hps too much for babies?

I plan to scrog 2 plants from seed in a closet and i was thinking the 250 hps might not be ok for the seedlings. Put the light too close, and ill frazzle them. Too far away and ill end up with 6 inch stalks...

Ive found these cool HO CFLs, 14w and 1020 lumens each. I thought 3 on each seedlings would be more than enough light. When theyve got to the 4th or 5th node i reckon theyd be strong enough to cope with the 250w.

Does this make sense?

Cheers guyz n galls!

you're in a closet - you need a layer of glass, air cooling, or at least a fan blowing over the tops of the girls to get a more powerful light in there...

250w should be fine but you still need a little ventilation.

when they are at the 4th or 5th node they are well beyond ready... I put em under metal halide when they pop up just cuz it makes an all around healthier plant from day 1.

I just started my first grow with a 400W MH and the seedlings did just fine, granted I had the light much higher than it is now. Also make sure to have plenty of ventilation like every1 has been saying; it's very important.

keep 12-14 inches to start then after a week or soo lowwer it down. with a good fan alone i can get a 250 watter 4-5 inches from tops with no damage to leaves.

I kept my 400w MH around 30 inches away and it looks like they're doing just fine:

I ordered 5 fem seeds and got 10 regulars...which was BS. Got a refund tho for the difference. I already blew through like 6 of them (burned em with CFL's)

the reason i thought about the 14w cfls was that i was reading a lot of threads here about cfls and im sorry i just dont get it....ppl saying oh, i had 24 x 42w cfls and i got x ounces...yeah with HUMUNGOUS amounts of watts...ive juggled the figures everyway and it seems hids WHOOP cfls, lumens, watts everything....even a 250w which in reality runs at 300w plus a 70w extraction fan is still more economical than a bunch of cfls...

wot do you think Dr.RR?

Id start off with CFL's in there seedling stage untill there ready to be vegged good and proper.
saves electric!
running the 250w would be fine at a distance but your wasting alot of energy/electricity!

My first ever grow started out with one 13w CFL. To my surprise the plant actually got pretty big, with a lot of stretching obviously. Towards the end of flowering I was running over 200w of CFL power and yielded 8g's lol. Since started my new grow with the MH, I can already tell such a huge difference. I am not looking back to CFL's. If you can deal with the heat (it's not a problem for me; one fan has taken care of that problem), I say go balls out with HID lighting.

What I have found out tho is that 13w CFL's run much hotter than 26watters or even 42watters. If you absolutely have to use CFL's I'd recommend using 26watters or higher.

Cheers Dr,

Bah...this is such a complex hobby...maybe ill take up fishing or something...i dont even smoke the shit, im fucked up enough without the weed lol!

Really? 13w cfls are hot? the 13w are special cfls, normally from thi ssupplier theyre 60l per watt but these ones are 75 per watt....

the other chap made a good point, cfls for the 1st 2 weeks would save me a bit of electricity which is important...a friend has 2 600w hps and the electric company called him and asked lots of questions....

ok...4 x 35w 6400k cfls for 1st 2 weeks then 250 hps scrog...thats my final answer!

jagermeister is cheap in usa? ive just opened a bottle and im pissed already! :)

cheers dr, thanks for the info!
