Hi,

I'm very new to this, and based on what I've read, HPS seems to be the best choice for indoor lighting systems (please correct me if I'm wrong).

My space is very limited, so I only want to grow a maximum of 4 plants.

Can you recommend a lighting system that is HPS and won't break my bank? Please be specific in terms of watts, volts and whatnot. Again, I'm very new to this so I have no idea about lighting. I'm reading a lot but I can't seem to find a good starting point on how to get started so I figured I'd start off with the lighting aspect of it, and thought maybe somebody here could make a recommendation based on the simple facts that :

1) My spacing is very limited
2) I'm new to this (so please try to keep it simple) :)

How much space are you talking? You need to consider that Hps lights put out some heat. Have you thought about going with florescent lights? I use a T-5 4' 4 tube mix spectrum H.O. You can get close to the plants. It seems to do the trick for me. Not to mention a little cheaper.

Space wise, I'm talking VERY limited; 4 feet (width) by 4 feet (length). BTW, given my limited space, how many plants do you think I'd be able to grow? 2? 3? 4? Height is not a problem, provided it's not taller than your average standard bedroom height.

I never realized heat would be an issue. I thought heat was a good thing for the plants. I plan on building an enclosure (4x4) so that I can lock it up for privacy's sake.

Given the dimensions I wish to utilize (4x4) can you recommend a lighting system?

No, I haven't.

After reading your post, I did a search but can't find it. Can you hook me up with a link?

Hps is the way to go. But speaking with experience I like florescent lighting. First off they are much cooler and you can put it within 2" from the plants. That keeps them from stretching and toppling over. A 4' T5 would work perfect for that kind of space. If you do decide to go with a Hps. Make sure you have a good exhaust for it. Or you will burn up those plants. A T5 with a fan blowing on low about 4" to 5" from the top of your plants will get about 80 degrees. Here is a link on some good prices. I have used them before. http://www.bestgrowlights.com/site/403863/page/45029

hells yes, give me 2 secs

https://www.rollitup.org/view.php?pg=faq

you can get there by clicking the button on the top of the screen that has a question mark in it
Thanks for the link! I've got a LOT of reading to do now.

Seeing as how I'm new to the scene, I've got the newbies viewpoint (in that I'm not familiar with this site completely just yet), they should consider creating a forum link (listed under the forum topics) called : Everything you need to know about getting started, and just link it to the FAQ's.

Oh well, just my two cents. But THANK YOU, I now have lots of reading to do. Very helpful. :)

I'm hoping I can get this up and running for around $300-$400 CAD.

I'm not an expert, I only have one grow. It was also in a space about the size of yours, and I learned quit a bit from that first grow. My biggest mistake was underestimating the smell. I had to take some measures to deal with it, but can't fully fix it until I harvest my (one) plant...very soon though.

Get the entire enclosure sealed, with plastic, reflective mylar, etc. except for intake and exhaust. Have a light-proof intake (intake grill & dust filter, attached to some flexible duct with lots of bends). The exhaust should have a carbon scrubber and be ducted to outside. You don't want the smell soaking into the walls, or leaking into areas that could spread throughout the house.

I chose 4' fluoro's. They actually create a fair amount of heat. My plants turned out excellent, but it may have taken longer than needed. They recommend T5's, but those are expensive, and hard to find. My local big-box-hardware has 4' fixtures that take both t8 or t12. You can get a mix of standard white T8's along with some T8 grow lamps from plant and aquarium stores. This allows you to pay cash, which I prefer.....and not have a credit card trail, and large packages being delivered.

I also found a 75w HPS at a local hardware store. It would not be hard to add a piece of sheet metal as a reflector to it. A bit or wire mesh should prevent plant from touching bulb. One should be adequate for a small space without adding a ton of heat. Especially if it's on a separate timer to only be on for 3 or 4 hours "mid-day". I'll see what the heat is like, then maybe add another when it's time for flowering.

Best of luck

Thanks for the feedback. I'll keep it in mind. To be honest, this is a project I plan on working on over the next year. I am in no rush to have a finished product.

Instead I want to do my research, buy the best tools that I can afford, get some feedback from users on this site, and build it myself (the enclosure) to save some money. My limited growing space is something that will not change, so I want to plan this just right.

I figure it'll be a few months easily, before I finish this project. But anyways, KaleoXxX hooked me up with the FAQ link (which I didn't find myself), so I'll have plenty of reading to do, and with it, lots of knowledge to soak in.

But thanks for the heads up on the odour control issue. I'll keep it in mind.

P.S. >> I wish to buy my lighting from my local Home Depot or Rona store, so what are the components of a complete lighting system? I've seen components like :

- Ballast
- Reflector
- Lamp (what exactly is the lamp? Is that the electrical box or is it merely the bulb?)

Worst come to worst, I'll buy one online. Been thinking about one of these two models.
1) First choice : http://www.elights.com/sun900517.html (400 watts, 5 year warranty, and CHEAPER)
2) Second choice : http://www.elights.com/sun9005451.html (400 watts, 2 year warranty, and almost double the cost because I think it's a commercial built-to order product)

What do you think of these, for a small grow space of 4'x4' ?

one 250w hps should be all you need for that grow. You'll need a good fan to cool it though.

The lamp is another name for the bulb. I would buy a fixture with a built-in ballast.

What are your thoughts on the one I linked earlier on?

im going to say go with a 250 watt light. you can pick them up at most hardware stores, or lighting stores....

take that light, hang it in a closet, put plants in closet, water plants, flower plants harvest. did you want it simple like that? because thats all it takes. $150 for the light, $50 for nutrients.

Edit: seen the post with the lights. http://www.elights.com/sun900517.html id buy it if your thinking about it, you could pull 6~ plants easily under that.
