Naw man, not a stupid question at all. The Beneficial Bacteria of Rid-X is basically the samething as Subculture B from General Hydroponics, only at a fraction of the price. They want roughly 34.00 for 3 oz and I buy Rid-X for $6.75 for 10.5 oz. The other day I bought a grocery store brand which was $5.25 for 24oz and am just as impressed with it as I was the Rid-X.
As for the roots, no, it will not eat them or damage them in anyway or no damage has been detected since I started adding it. Yesterday I setup a DWC for one of my Habenaro Pepper plants using only organic nutes. Gonna see if the "slug" mess forms again. So far all is good and this morning I awoke only to find the leaves appeared more green and lush. So so far I'm using it with regular nutes and organic in DWC. As long as you supply oxygen, which is a must anyways in DWC, the B.B will strive. You will get some real good bubbling action once the B.B cultivates which seems to take about 3-4hours. I do add some Fulvic Acid (50ppm) and some Humic Acid to my nutes. Basically the B.B breaks down unused nutes to make more accessible to the plant. The more I think about it the more I think it would help prevent Root Rot....I may be way off on that but I think it's logical.
If you do try it, and I say go for it, be sure to make a "ball" with something like Cheesecloth or pantyhose. You will get some residue on the sides of the bucket but don't let that concern ya. I just can't believe this actually worked. Give it a try, you can always do a nute change if you don't see any results but it won't hurt. I once tried Mycorr in DWC but did not see any improvements like I have with B.B.
