reccomended dimensions for a box???

Hi there...I am looking at starting a small closet grow, (2 plants max, likely start with one) and I'm wondering how a big a box I should use.

I'm looking at using cardboard, as it is discrete, readily available, cheap and easy.

My closet dimensions are 54 cm x 144 x 133 (21" x 56 x 52) and I'm just looking for something small, non-complicated, and enough to give me enough green for personal use. What are some MINIMUM dimensions for a indoor-type plant?

I was initially thinking of ~ a 12" x 34" x 60", (two boxes on top of one another, using just some i have laying around) but now I'm concerned this will be too small, and I'll need to find larger boxes.

Thanks for your help...:)

why dont u just use the closet its self insted of putting a box inside it.
and i wouldnt recommend cardboard neither.
ud prob get 2 very small plants in there (try go for a low ryder or sumet, definatly an indica strain) but i think you need to do a little more researsh before you even start the grow, to get a decent amount of bud you guna need a high power light and when iin such a small box your guna need decent ventilation.
just doa little more research around the forum and ull find wat u looking for, mj will grow under most situations but its just getting the most out of it for your efforts.

hope it helps and good luck with the grow

would 2 or 3 cfl's not be enough??? and if i made the boxes slightly bigger, would that make a bigger difference? i dont want to grow just right in the closet because then if anyone ever opens it its not RIGHT there.

First question would be: How much weed do you want to get out of this?
Just enough to smoke to myself for a while...the more the better, obviously, but just a small to moderate amount is all i really expect. i dont want to grow a plant that is far, far smaller than what it should be, though..

Without knowing what you consider a good enough amount to be worthwhile, it's hard for anyone to give you advice. Some people are happy with a few joints per week. Others smoke an ounce per week.

I will give you this though:
A good grower, using an HPS light, with a good environment, can achieve one gram per watt of lighting used. So a 600 watt HPS will give 600 grams of weed per harvest.

If you use CFLs, half a gram per watt is considered good, since they put out much less light.

If you have a bad environment, high temps etc, your yield will be reduced.
If you have poor airflow, your yield will be reduced.
If you mess up on nutes, your yield will be reduced.
If you over/under water, your yield will be reduced.

etc.

By going for such a small setup, and trying to do things too cheaply, you leave very little margin for error. Done properly, this hobby can ensure that you never need to buy weed again.

That said, my first grow was done under 3x 20 watt CFLs, and gave me enough weed to be dealer free for a couple of weeks. I used the money I saved to buy an HPS, and things got much better from there.

I dont smoke a disgusting amount of weed...if i have it, maybe a half q a week, give or take a few g's.

my temperature is usually 69-73 F, and i'm thinking of doing 2-3 80 mm fans for strengthening/ventilation....nutes and water i would do cautiously so as to not starve the plant nor give it 'cardiac arrest'. lol.

if anyone opens the closet anyway they will prob smell it or its guna look really suspicious and they guna say "what is that"
put a lock on closet and just tell people its where you keep your beloved gilbert and sullivan records, haha or sumet random like that.
those temps is that just the temp without the light running cos when they start running they guna add heat in there

If anyone ever open the door then they are gonna see your cardboard box that has plants inside. It's better to just never have any option of having someone open the closet. And If you don't have to worry about someone opening the closet then you should be fine to use the whole closet :)

This thread is hilarious. SUBSCRIBED.

With that said I"M growing in a box. No one can recomend a particular size. YOU ultimately decide what you want to grow in. If you want a small grow, why not concider converting an old piece of furniture. Night Stand, dresser etc, AND learn some techniques to maximise yeild for small plant grows.

You can grow in anything, BUT for it to work you must find the balance between, Light, Heat, Air/Venting , And WATER. Different environments need to be tackeled using various methods.

Innovative venting designs can really make a big impact on what you can grow in a box.

I have a turnkey setup ... its measured 36x36x42 ..... the flowering chamber as it is referred to. I have been able to grow some nice personal smoke wit that setup. The plants are highly adaptable .... bended and te4ased and curved to fit their space. and all they do is keep growing .... of course it affects your overall yield and productivity measure ... but in my case, if I get a decent yield and some decent quality ... that's really all that matters. Walk on!!~~~~

My box Dimentions are 1'3"L x 11"w x 1"8"H LOLOL

It's gunna grow GREAT POT too. I'm concentrating on two plants. I've got 4 - 42 watt CFL's in there 2 2700k and 2 6500k. Venting is using the cool tube principal, with passive intakes. It's a nice STEALTH design that can potentially produce a up to 2 ounces of pot.

Forgive my noobiness...whats the cool tube principle?

I layed out my grow box made from PVC pipe and a 5'x5'x5' can hold 18 two gallon containers,, or 12 5 gallon containers allowing your plant to grow a little mroe than 3 feet from the top taking away for the height of the bucket assuming its soil and not hydro.

Cool tube is where you have your HPS bulb in a clear glass tube about twice it's size in diameter, sealed off from the actual room, seperate ventalation pulls air across the bulb reducing it's heat production significantly.

IN MY MICRO GRO, i designed it in such a way that passive intake holes in the floor provide fresh air, while i sealed off the top 4 lights with a piece of plexie Glass leaving about a half inch gap on the door side so it can pull it;s air up from the grow area, across all 4 bulbs and then out the cabnit. Temps are a consistant 82F The plants will grow right up into the plexie without getting burnt.

Ahh, I see. That makes sense. What are some good stores to buy HPS bulbs from? Places like Home hardware are here in Canada...but where I live, it's quite a journey to get there, so it would be great if they were sold at something like Walmart/Zellers, or at some other shop that is closer to me.

SPLIFFtime, your photos don't show...I'd be very interested to look at your set-up, it sounds the most like what I had in mind.

Depends how big you wanna go, i'm in canada too. You can find 70w and 150 watt hps security light systems at home depot. That can be converted into grow lights quite easily. I bought my HPS 400W system at High Times in London Ontario.

Remember you need a ballast to go with the bulb.

Sorry, what's a ballast for a HPS bulb? A link to a sticky or a written description would be much appreciated :)

It's a Transformer in a box kinda thing that controls the voltage going to the light. Thats why even though a 400w hps bulb WILL fit into a regular house hold socket, but it will do nothing. That tube inside is givin a start up charge of about 6500 volts by the ballast to fire up the lamp.

So The transformer box plugs into the wall, and the light socket is wired to the transformer box.
