250w with a glass hood you can get up to 18-12 inches away depending on how much light your plants can handle.

and i wouldnt worry about yielding more if you've only flowered with cfls before. before i moved to cali i would pull a qp minimum (depending on the strain) from 6 sqaure feet with a 250w, granted i had a sog and not 1 good size plant :eyesmoke:
My 250w has a glass shield and I keep it around 8 inches off the tops just using computer fans.. temps between 78-80. A little higher than normal but they do alright

I started real close, like 4" from the glass shield.I have a 100cfm exhaust fan and ducting but in a closet without good venting, it got hotter in the room with the exhaust air heating the ducting, no cooler under the light really.
I now have a fan hitting the light from below, and one across the top of light, and plant canopy. The cheap 4 or 5" metal fans. Also a 16" fan blowing across the grow area.
With the door open room temps stay below 80 under the canopy it's pushing
86.
I have a plan for venting the light after this grow. Hope to get temps a bit lower.
I'll also start higher with the light and work it lower as i flower.

more pics? I'll be using a 220w hps (most likely) so just trying to see what abouts I'll be working with given you're setup.

Just a few shots of my space.
The cardboard is mylar lined on the other side, as is the piece laying down.
Lights 9-11" from canopy.
3'x3'x5' grow space.
The 2 small fans circulate hot air from the light, 16" fan moving air in the closet.
Will be venting through the back wall next grow.
Light will be rehung, turned 90 degrees for next grow.

I've got the same mini fans you've got, 2 of them too to help move the hot air away from my 250w light fixture. Two of them aimed upwards at the light and 2 computer fans blowing straight across the grow area.

Nice stuff keep it up.. how did you solve your ph issue? I think thats whats getting my lower leaves to come off prematurely..

Basically i had to break down and buy a digital ph tester.
I looked for Hanna meters, couldn't find any locally, so i bought a Milwaukee PH pen.
Cost around $100.00

Once i got the pen, i saw my ph was way to low when i mixed my flower nutes. I had used the test drops up until this point. Not very accurate, especially in colored water.

My runoff now tests between 6.1-6.3
Aside from the leaves that were already affected, all new growth since the corrections in ph has been nice and green.
