Using LEDs for lighting

Hello to everyone, this is my first post here.

So, I was wondering about LEDs.

I am setting up a indoor grow and have read a few books and so on, but they are all about 5 years old and only mention LEDs as something for the future.

How far have they gone? are they worth it?

The growing area will only be about 10-12 square feet and initial cost isn't too important (unless it gets stupid) while high electricity bills and lots of heat are a problem (it gets hot here in the summer)

Can you reccomend any manufacturers?

I have not heard of anybody using LEDs except for small grows... like 1x1...

A 10X12 room handle a LOT of LIGHT and a lot of plants..

How big are you thinking about going?

You should probably focus on HID lighting.. specifically, HPS 1000 watt BULBS and reflectors..

GK, i think he means 10 sqft or 12 sqft total, not 10x12

but even still, i haven't seen LED's grow more than one good plant at a time really...

but if you're looking at a 3x3 or 3x4 type room, a 600w hps would be perfect for that size...

I would like to see NIB grow with LEDs.... I want to try it myself.. just have not had te time...

NIB - If yo go with HPS lightig in a small space, ventilation is going to be key.. make sure you can take the heat out of that small space with a FAN of some sort...


If this is your first grow and heat is an issue.. it can be done with CFLs too..

i like the prospect of LEDS, but i don't think that there are any models out there that are not incredibly over priced...

hell, a 400w hps is only gonna run you 140 after taxes from HTG, and then a homemade cooltube ain't no thang.... haha

i suggest the HPS for now... i want them to develope the LEDS a bit more... that's how i feel atleast

I have got some LED lights and I will try and grow a plant just using the LED for flowering. I got two lights and will use both on the plants. I got the LEDs for practically nothing. So why not give it a go and let u all know how its going. I got the lights coz i thought it would give the lower buds a little boost of light i put it 2 centimetres away from the plant. There is little heat coming from the lights so u can have it almost touching the plant. I'm gonna Germ some Lowrider #2 x ????? a mystery plant and start growing under these lights, just one plant gonna put under the LEDs, gonna germ 4 of the seeds so im hoping i get two females one will go under a 400w HPS and the other the LEDs. That way we can see the comparison of the two plants under each conditions. Gonna do some germing now later will start a journal as soon as it sprouts.
