Hi,

I have a couple lowriders that are about 11 days old and have dried out leaves, yellow patches, and a little bit of yellow tips on the edges (see pics). I am growing in a box... 82degrees, w/ (4) 27 watt daylight CFLs & (2) soft white CFLs. the CFLs have been a couple inches from the plants. The box is 3ft high, 2ft deep and 1.5 feet wide. The box is lined w/ a space blanket. The plants are in miracle grow potting soil..4"pots. I haven't been watering until the dirt is dry...about every 3or4 days. I added a solution of standard miracle grow yesterday (1/2 tablespoon for about 1/2 a gallon). It almost seems like the leaves got burnt as some are all dried out! Am I underwatering??? Lights too close? They have been lit for 24 hours (lowriders) ...too much light?? Help!!!

THanks!!!

Thats too much MG, you dont need much at all, especially at that size. Try a quarter spoon for a gallon, but once a week until its at least a foot. For right now you want to flush though, and dont add any more feed for the next week

You're Overfeeding these babies, way too young to be giving them this much food, plus they're in miracle grow potting soil which probably already has nutrients in the soil.... the extreme dark green of your leaves is the over abundance of nitrogen in the food, and what looks like the tips of the leaves are burning is exactly that, the fertilizer is burning them and if you don't FLUSH the soil with about 2 gallons of water to get all the ferts out you may have a bigger problem. The leaves will continue to "dry out" until the entire leaf crumbles up like it's dry. These babies don't need food this young unless you're watering and notice obvious nutrient deficiencies, also... when you start feeding your babies, if it says 1 tablespoon per gallon of water, you should start with about 1/4 tablespoon per gallon and work your way up gradually, you'll find with this plant and other that a plant will bounce back faster from lack of food than it will from overfeeding. sometimes if you overfeed the plant will stress and lockout nutes and then the problem is compounded even more. flush these babies and they should be fine! If you have a local nursery go there and get regular potting soil or planting mix with no nutes, this way you have total control over exactly what type of food she's getting and how much. goodluck with the grow and steer clear of miracle grow, it will bite you in the ass!

My first guess would be that you burned your plants by feeding them to soon. You said they are/were 11 days old and you fed them "a solution of standard miracle grow yesterday (1/2 tablespoon for about 1/2 a gallon)." While I have never grown that strain I do know that young plants do not need to be fertilized and should not be fertilized until they are around three to five weeks old depending on the strain and even then a weak solution for the first feeding or two should be used before feeding at full strength.

But heat stress can easily be mistaken for nute burn and while your temperature is a slight bit high it is not really bad but what I see in your pictures looks like it might be heat stress or a combination of nute burn and heat stress. If it were only the tips of your leaves that were cooked looking, or at least if the problem started there and then spread, and not much of the edges and also areas between the leaf veins looking cooked or having necrotic spotting I'd say nute burn and only nute burn but your pictures seem to point to more than just one possibility.

You said you are using a "space blanket," I assume for reflectivity, and if so that could be the problem. What some people call space blankets or emergency blankets are not a good option for a reflective material.

They are not very effective at reflecting light because it is so thin. Holding it between you and a light source, many small holes are noticed at the intersections of creases and the entire blanket is translucent to begin with, this coupled with the many creases that are in it when you purchase it takes away a significant amount of it reflectivity. It is very easily creased as well which also detracts from its ability to reflect light. And while it is reflects nearly 90% of radiant heat energy, it is only able to reflect around 70% of the light.

Because they are easily creased and somewhat difficult to get really smooth and flat they can and will create hot spots even with a lower percentage of light reflection than some other reflective materials provide and if your plants are suffering from heat stress it could be due to hot spots and when you add that to the nearly 90% radiant heat reflection that could at least be part of your problem … maybe.

I have used MG in the past and 1/2 tablespoon per half gallon is waaaaaaaay too much for a normal healthy plant let alone a baby like that. Mj usually likes frequent feedings of dilute nutes (1/4-1/2 strength). Always alternate feeds to prevent salt buildup. Best of luck my friend.

My plants are presenting the same physical symptoms. They also have deep veins and feel like paper, correct? I am guessing either light shock or too much Mg for my ladies. Not sure though.
