pot and pregnancy

just wanted to say that i admitt to smoking pot while pregnant and my 10 month old is very happy, very healthy and bigger and more advanced than other babies. i had a lot of problems with sickness and eating, and from that stress so i started to do some research and found a lot of info on marijuana being safe. i read an extensive study from jamaica where they studied babies born from mothers who toked and some who did not. the babies born from tokers where actually healthier, happy and more alert than babies born from non-tokers. the study was a good clean study as the mothers who toked did not smoke cigs, drink or do other drugs whereas american studies didn't weed out the these other influences. just wanted to say that toking a little once a week was my savior mentally and physically during my pregnancy and i'd do it again with my next baby. canabis is medicine, not a drug.
The first problem here is that you got this "study" from jamaica.... LOL. These guys were probably so high they were watching a TV show and recording the results.

I have a friend who threw up everyday when she was pregnant, putting her in the hospital a few times for dehydration. A little pot cookie could have put an end to that stress. She never did it but I think that would have been safer for her and the baby in the long run if she could keep down her food and vitamins just by eating a little pot. Everything in moderation and do what works. If I was throwing up everyday you better believe I would consider a natural remedy to cure that. By the way, I never smoked during my pregnancy, then again, I didn't have any ailments.

can we at least agree that this wouldnt be an issue if she hadnt got blazed and forgot the rubber??? lol j/k

my little bro was diagnosed with hodgkins lymphoma almost 4 years ago. for the first 2 years he did the chemo and did nothing but lose his hair and about 50lbs. the cancer never showed any signs of slowing at all. he pretty much just gave up. he decided the he wasnt going to live how ever long he had left laying in a bed not able to to take care of himself. so he stopped the chemo in the middle of his 3rd round, and all the drugs the doctors had given him. he still couldnt do much compared to other guys in their early 20's, but he felt better. he lived with our mom and, couldnt leave his house by himself. after 6 months he was going bananas having no1 really to talk to other than mom. so i started to pick him up and bring him to my house a few times a week. we would get high and kick back and talk for hours.
3 months after i started to smoke with him he went to the doctor and found out his cancer had stopped progressing. he was able to eat and had gained some weight back. he was able to stay awake all day without the 3 or 4 naps he needed before.
he went back to the doctor a year ago and found out the cancer has all but disappeared. the glands in his neck that were the size of plums are now the size of grapes. he is completely able to manage all aspects of his life for himself other than work. i own a body shop, so he went to work for me. he works in my shop at least 8 hours a day 5 days a week. he went to school for 2 years to be a social worker. the only reason he works for me is because he couldnt find a job in his field that didnt drug test, and he wasnt willing to stop smoking the thing he believes saved his life.
its really is a shame that pot has gotten such a bad rep. he went to school because he wanted to help people, now he cant. not because he is too sick, but because he found a way to get well and some1 said its not ok if you get healthy that way.

its not always about getting high. LEGALIZE IT PEOPLE!!!!! you could be next.

besides, smoking a little weed is nowhere near as bad as some of these prescription medicines the doctor will shove down your throat.

I smoke weed and it takes the aches and pains especially the once a month pains.

by Paul Armentano
by Paul Armentano
Who could imagine that cannabis might one day offer hope as a cure for cancer? The United States government, that’s who.
For the past 30 years, U.S. officials have willfully ignored clinical research indicating that marijuana can inhibit the growth of certain type of malignant tumors. However, the recent publication of a trio of clinical studies and a pair of scientific reviews have effectively blown the lid off "Cancergate," and revealed that pot’s medical value may be far greater than ever presumed.
THE EMERGING EVIDENCE
Last year, five scientific journals published prominent articles trumpeting cannabinoids (compounds in marijuana) as potential anti-cancer agents.
These include:

  • Clinical trial data published in January 2003 issue of the Journal of the American Society of Clinical Investigation that found cannabinoids significantly inhibit skin tumor growth in mice. Investigators of the study concluded, "The present data indicate that local cannabinoids administration may constitute an alternative therapeutic approach for the treatment of non-melanoma skin cancer."
  • Clinical trial data published in the March 2003 issue of The FASEB Journal that found that the "local administration of a non-psychoactive cannabinoid inhibits angiogenesis (tissue growth) of malignant gliomas (brain tumors)."
  • A clinical review in the October 2003 issue of the prestigious journal Nature Reviews Cancer that concluded that cannabinoids’ "favorable drug safety profile" and proven ability to inhibit tumor growth make them desirable agents in the treatment of cancer. According to the review’s author, tumors inhibited by cannabinoids include: lung carcinoma, glioma, thyroid epithelioma, lymphoma/leukemia, skin carcinoma, uterus carcinoma, breast carcinoma, prostate carcinoma, and neuroblastoma (a malignant tumor originating in the autonomic nervous system or the adrenal medulla and occurring chiefly in infants and young children).
  • Clinical trial data published in the November 2003 issue of the Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics that found the administration of the cannabinoid cannabidiol (CBD) inhibits the growth of human glioma cells both in vitro (e.g., a petri dish) and in animals in a dose-dependent manner. Investigators concluded, "Non-psychoactive CBD produce a significant antitumor activity both in vitro and in vivo, thus suggesting a possible application of CBD as an antineoplastic agent (something which prevents the growth of malignant cells.)"
[*]And finally, a clinical review in the December 2003 issue of the journal Expert Opinion on Therapeutic Targets that summarized "the demonstrated antitumor actions of cannabinoids," and elaborated on "possible avenues for the future development of cannabinoids as antitumor agents."
AND SUBSEQUENT MEDIA BLACKOUT
Despite these stunning findings, media coverage of them in North America has been virtually non-existent. As noted by Richard Cowan, editor of the website MarijuanaNews.com, "The New York Times, The Washington Post and Los Angeles Times all ignored this story, even though its newsworthiness is indisputable: a benign substance occurring in nature destroys deadly brain tumors."
Why the media blackout? For starters, all of these studies were conducted overseas. And secondly, not one of them has been acknowledged by the U.S. government.
U.S. KNEW IN ’74... AND AGAIN IN ’96!
This wasn’t always the case. In fact, the first ever experiment documenting pot’s anti-tumor effects took place in 1974 at the Medical College of Virginia at the behest of the U.S. government. The results of that study, immortalized in an August 18, 1974 Washington Post newspaper feature, were that "THC slowed the growth of lung cancers, breast cancers and a virus-induced leukemia in laboratory mice, and prolonged their lives by as much as 36 percent."
Despite these favorable preliminary findings, U.S. government officials banished the study, and refused to fund any follow up research until conducting a similar – though secret – study in the mid-1990s. That study, conducted by the U.S. National Toxicology Program to the tune of $2 million concluded that mice and rats administered high doses of THC over long periods had greater protection against malignant tumors than untreated controls. However, rather than publicize their findings, government researchers shelved the results – which only became public one year later after a draft copy of its findings were leaked in 1997 to the journal AIDS Treatment News, which in turn forwarded the story to the national media.
Nevertheless, in the nearly eight years since the completion of the National Toxicology trial, the U.S. government has yet to fund a single additional study examining pot’s potential as an anti-cancer agent.
SCIENCE IGNORED NO MORE
Fortunately, researchers at Madrid, Spain’s Complutense University, School of Biology have generously picked up where U.S. researchers so abruptly left off. In 1998, the research team – led by investigator Manuel Guzman – discovered that THC can selectively induce program cell death in brain tumor cells without negatively impacting the surrounding healthy cells. Then in 2000, Guzman’s team reported in the journal Nature Medicine that injections of synthetic THC eradicated malignant gliomas (brain tumors) in one-third of treated rats, and prolonged life in another third by six weeks. A commentary to the study noted that the results were the first to convincingly demonstrate that cannabis-based treatments may successfully combat cancer.
Today, Guzman believes that enough favorable clinical evidence exists supporting pot’s anti-cancer properties to warrant clinical trials in humans. "The scientific community has gained substantial knowledge of the palliative and anti-tumor actions of cannabinoids during the past few years," Guzman wrote in the October 2003 issue of Nature Reviews Cancer. "Anti-tumor compounds should selectively affect tumor cells [and] it seems that cannabinoids can do this, as they kill [malignant] tumor cells but do not affect their non-transformed counterparts and might even protect them from cell death. ... As cannabinoids are relatively safe compounds, it would be desirable that clinical trials using cannabinoids ... could accompany [ongoing] laboratory studies to allow us to use these compounds in the treatment of cancer." Guzman concludes the article by noting that the Spanish Ministry of Health recently approved a human clinical trial – the first ever – aimed at investigating the effects of intracranially administered THC on the life expectancy of volunteers suffering from malignant brain tumors.

there are sme extensive studies about PLANT poisons..

That almost all plants have a poison in them to stiop animals from eatingthem... The body tolerates this poison and can work around it and even utilize it to kill cancers...

BUT when a woman is pregnant the BODY has to get rid of these posions and so she gets morning sickness.....

NOt sure if it is true.... but.. when I am sick, I usually look at what has been GOING in.. rather than just add more shit to the mess... ya feelz me?

Morning sickness refers to the nausea and vomiting that some women have when they become pregnant. It is caused by the sudden increase in hormones during pregnancy. Although morning sickness is more common in the morning, it can last all day for some women.Morning sickness is very common early in a pregnancy. It tends to go away later in pregnancy, and it's almost always gone by the second trimester (the fourth month). But there isn't a set time for it to stop because each woman is different, and each pregnancy is different.

My wife got horribly sick during both her pregnancies. Had to be hospitalized for dehydration because she couldn't keep anything down.

For the first kid, she was put on Zofran - a drug usually given for Chemo. It helped enough to keep her from puking, but no appetite.

Second one, the Zofran didn't do squat. I finally suggested she take a puff. By this time she was ready to try anything.

1 puff and she was all good. It would last 4 hours or so.

People have used pot in hundreds of cultures for thousands of years - I'm sure a few moms inhaled during those millenia. And yet everything seems fine with the kids

Now what's better for the baby - 4 puffs of pot which has been anecdotally tested for thousands of years, of x number of sythetic chemicals that haven't been tested in pregnancy at all?

Hey jordy... you're not telling porkies again are you? Remember when you told me you were a journalist, and the next time you came to London you were going to kick my ass? Then I found out you were a no-mark, full of shit...

If you really were a biology student, something like this would interest you. You'd be able to come up with relevant arguments as to why pandabear is wrong. Instead you start swearing, and bullshitting... again.

I don't mind when it's me... but if you're going to start this shit with other members you're going to have to go.

if you do not excercise or sweat to have some daily practice. And have a healthy peleo diet... I see it difficult to use any medication or herb or an remedy... Since diet and excercise cure 99 percent of all issues.. Physical and mental.

wow, i just checked back in and found the debates whether pertaining to smoking while pregnant or otherwise, pretty entertaining and informative. i guess it came down to the fact that i used to smoke cigarettes and pot, drink daily and further back, partake in a lot of harder stuff. by the time i got pregnant, on purpose, i was only smoking a couple cigarettes a week and drinking on weekends, both which i stopped instantly. i was very sick for months. it was akin to being car sick all day long, day and night with no relief. besides being sick as a dog, it started to stress me out and i couldn't run for booze, pot and cigs the way i would have normally. i was clean for months when i started to do a little research into the effects of different substances during pregnancy. cigarettes and alcohol are TOXIC. Both can cause death to you or harm to a fetus. Pot is not. Noone has ever died or gotten deathly ill by smoking too much pot. i agree that the 'smoke' part of the situation was not the smartest move but lots of my friends were born to cigarette smoking mothers and they were all fine. it was totally acceptable in the 70's. when i toked it was only a drag or two and otherwise i was extremely healthy. all the studies show that it's ok to have a glass of wine (or 2) a day while pregnant and that seems like an extreme excess considering alcohol is toxic. anyway, i can go on and on and try to defend myself but i'm actually not trying to. i feel secure with what i decided to do. just wanted to open up a little conversation. i don't feel judged and i appreciate your comments whether supportive or not. it was my choice to start this thread. i just think overall if everyone minded their own business, outside of thread discussions and the likes, this world would be a better place. :) yeay pot!
