Moisture Meter

Just wondering if anybody has one, decided to pick one up today for the hell of it since Im using 7 gallon pots.

Just wondering if I can keep the meter in the dirt or is it something im gonna have to prop at all the time. Either way its a nice cheap investment

I have one but don't use it unless im confused. Mostly i just pick up my pots and feel the weight. If yours is like mine no you dont want to leave it in the dirt. Just stick in in various spots as needed.

I have a Rapitest moisture meter but am unsure how to use it.. I've been able to finger test and lift just fine so far, but I'd appreciate it if someone explained how to use it.

Not trying to be a dick but take those moisture meters & stomp them with an iron boot,no kiddin,go stomp them right away.

If your growing in soil you need to be PERSONALLY in touch with what your plants need on a day to day basis,pick your pots up when they're bone dry & feel the weight,then feel the weight after you water,use these weights as references.

Also dig around with your fingers & scarify the top 2 inches of your soil every day or two,this will give you personal contact with the soil,your fingers will tell you when the plants need water,doing this also helps keep your soil from compacting over the long haul.

EDIT, I forgot,scarifying the soil also helps drastically with pest problems.

put it in the soil and ony water when it says dry you dont want to overwater and than pull it out wipe it off and set it aside for next use.

PANHEAD has it right... all growers should be "personally" in touch with their plants. Unfortunately though, even the most in-touch newbie might not really know what to look for. My recommendation would be to do all of the above (a) finger test (b) lift/weight test and (c)moisture meter. By doing all three a newb can get a much better idea of what to look for in the finger and lift test by having a comparison from the meter. I would think after a few weeks to a month of "knowing" how much the container weighs when the meter is reading "2+ out of 5" they will be able to ditch the meter for good.... that's my few cents anyway (even if it's worth less than that)

EDIT: don't leave the meter in the soil. Read the instructions!

Thanks- I'm going to start getting more in touch and using the meter as a back up.. maybe instead of stomping it I will return it and spend the $4 on more lights.. (maybe 1 more bulb? lol)
