My new mom cabinet (lots of pics)

I originally was asking questions about my new to me 250w MH light in the Indoor section. It then turned into a thread about the Mother Cabinet. I decided to create a new thread dedicated to the cabinet. A lot has been done since these photos but I want to get the thread rollin'

I'm an outdoor guy trying some indoor. I've rooted a number of clones. Three different strains. I'll know which ones will be mothers once I get them out from under the T5 and into this cabinet.

The mother cabinet is not big but will be well managed...I think

Here is the light. The bulb is a 250w GE:

I've had this neat old sewing cabinet for years. She needed a few mods as do all cabinets for our needs. I'll post images and explain as I go. I really like this cabinet because of the removable lid on it. It just adds another layer of something cool to mess with. It's build of hard wood instead of MDF or particle board so it's really sturdy.

Here she is. A few handles and maybe a lock for security. She's not too tall. Like 40".

Removable lid.

Countersunk area...probably for a surface mounted sewing machine. I don't know...Currently my plans are to fill this in flush and make here whole.

Lots of shit to remove believe it or not. Counter weights, hinges...the wooden drawers I took apart with care because they are not on rollers and use wooden guides. I could use them later on something.

Here she is all opened up.

Today I caked on the semi gloss hi temp paint. Not for reflective purposes but more for easly clean up if there is a spill.

This is the new cover for that hole. I'll definately set it up so it can be removed later incase I want to mount the light flush on top. For now I'm going to fill the hole. This type of ply wood should bet painted very well. It doesn't like humidity. She will see lots of paint.

Today I painted and built that lid. Now I just need to figure out my set up. The bottom of the cabinet will get a piece of wood to clean up that hole. It's a nice little cabinet.

The lid installed.

I am going to remove the legs even though they look nice. I bought some 3" tall casters with locks so she can roll under my work bench and lock on place.

I got more photos coming. I've got all the woodworking done and all the parts are here for everything...door seals included. I just need to wrap it up. After all the additional work a little touch up paint inside wouldn't hurt. It know it won't yield more, but I'll feel better.

Here are some basic ventilation shots. Am I on the right track? 4" Inductor with 6" passive exhaust. That bulb is friggin' hot so I want this cabinet to breath. I think the fan is rated at 60+CFM...

A terrible shot here...

But imagine the cabinet built and all this mounted...plus some other goodies

For $3.50 I got this nice little thingy where the damper will open when the fan sucks...not bad for $3.50. It will be painted to match the house bongsmilie

I guess if the fan blows hard enough this vent should look like this

That's it for now. my plan is to have everything functioning this weekend.

First off, thanks for commenting guys...I thought this thread was going down in flames

I bought two cheap ass 4" fans from Home Depot online (only sold online)...they were like $14each. CFM rating is 50 or so. I think one will get the job done but if not I bought two.

I hooked up the lamp and it got HOT. So who knows what will work...1 fan or 2.

I got more photos to upload. I just want to get this thing running.

Sounds good. It is so hard to wait and test everything!
Realistically I need to get this thing running asap cause I have some business to tend to with these plants. For now I think I might just draw air from inside the garage (it's always cool) near the concrete slab (even cooler) and not run the 6" outside. All this shit is taking too long :wall:

So! In an effort to get some of these plants under the MH the intake and exhause are going to be simplified. Still clean, but simplified. Short on time and help.

I will adjust everything if it needs to be done but with a steady 75degree garage temp I think I can get away with whay I'm doing. The exhause may bring up the garage temp a bit though so I have a few windows that may need to be opened.

We shall see. I think she'll be running today. Just waiting on some paint to dry :-P

Damn dude I would of bought that thing off of you. You just turned an antique sewing cabinet into a grow box, lol. I like old shit like that.

Looks good though man, keep up the good work!!!!

Yeah, I've heard that more than once. It is a nice cabinet but the cracks on the cracks on the doors and a bad repair job by the previous owner made it hard to turn into anything respectable. It can be easy to fix stuff...it can be really hard to fix somebody's shitty repair. "Once it's glued you're screwed."

So she lives on in a new life.

My problem is sealing the doors. I hate that sticky foam crap but with double doors like this my original plan of putting a tube like threathold down didn't work.

I have yet to really seal up the cabinet. The hole for the light plus the doors make it nearly impossible to make that intake vent move. I really want that air across the plants and not just sucking in from everywhere. Just me putting my hand over the light power cord hole creates a little movement with the intake vent. There is hope...

Yes, the moms won't be big, so I will be pruning a lot. Next time I'm just gonna build my own boring plywood box. This hard wood can be a bitch to work with.

I said F it on the through wall set up. Here are the two 4" hole cuts.

Until this intake vent moves like the exhaust vent I won't be happy. We'll see. I have some sealing to do.

This is the hunk of shit they give you to mount your fan to your cabinet. I added like 5 layers of duct tape for a tight fit. The shot where it's mounted you'll see the sticky foam sealer. The exhaust and intake are nice and tight. Just need everything else to be sealed. That's the hard part it looks like.

Here you can it mounted. Those tabs are curled in only so I can screw in this thing.

Sorta finished shot.

This is my half as finished venting. I don't really need the vent for the exhaust but it gives me an idea of what to expect from the intake.

Looks kinda gangster like this. A little ghetto but not too bad.

This is where she hides...

I guess that's it unless my garage gets too hot and I need to start running the intake and exhaust outside. The moms wont be huge but that's ok.

Oh man. . . that's an old sewing machine cabinet. Those are hard to come by and you destroyed it. Sad to see that. :(

Is this a bud site or a sewing site? My wife sews and never looks at the thing. It sat in a corner for at least five years being neglected. At least she's being used now.

You guys are killing me on the sewing cabinet bit...:blsmoke:

LOL, If I saw it at a garage sale I'd buy it, but it's yours so who cares right?

They'll get over it, I moreso enjoy the thought patterns and how people use their imaginations to use whatever they have laying around to build their grow cabs.

thats pretty sweet I have an old wardrobe that I'm gonna use, whenever I get around to dealing with it
If I had to do it all over again, being that I am and was a major car audio guy and love building cabinets...I would have built one from scratch.

I find myself chasing the orirginal design to make it mine.

Two doors? No one door to seal. Then I could have one of those sinching/clasping latches to really seal up the door when closed. Finding trays for this is a bitch. What if I want a veg box...

Plus, old hardwood is really OLD HARD WOOD. It's not problem to drill a small hole but anything over .5" took a lot more power than I thought. Think about how dry and hard 50 year old cherry wood is. Fucking hard shit.

To drill out those 4" holes I had to use an electric impact gun. Something I bust out only to remove lugs from tires...On top of that my impact wrench was so hot I could barely touch it cause it took forever.

By yourself a few sheets of cheap 3/4" plywood (not OSB) and build your own if you have the tools. I could have cut my time in half and been a little happier in the end.

Overall I'm stoked.

Sealed up a few holes and the intake vent is opening fine.

Time to grow some moms. Now I need to learn this Bonzai shit I think. I don't have much room :blsmoke:
