aeroponics- 54 Gallon Rubbermaid, 3 inch net pots

i am currently trying to make an aeroponics system with a 54 gallon rubbermaid tote. i have seen a lot of do it yourself videos that use these containers. my question is how many 3 inch net pots should i use for one container. please keep in mind that i will be letting the plant grow from start to finish in a 3 inch net pot. i have seen some growers use 8 sites in this big container and i have seen some growers use 32 but they didnt say if there grow was successful or not. what is the maximimum amount of 3 inch net pots i can use without affecting the plants roots or health?

what are the dimentions of the tote and your grow area. also you want to take into consideration the wattage of your light. the height you intend to grow your plants and so on. I'll check back for more info. Post pics if ya got em.

54 gallons of water?
Trying to control the pH and you will need $200 worth of nutrients for one tank! And controling the temperature of the water? That is an aweful lot of work, and the day will come when you will tell yourself
I wish I had listened to Roseman or someone and started with a 8 to 10 gallon tote instead.

Man, all very LARGE systems still use small tanks. I grow 3 very large plants in one 5 gallon bucket,a dn the roots have plenty of room. I grow 6 very alrge plants in a 8 gallon tote. It would be very very difficult to control the temperature of a 54 gallon tank. or control the pH. or haul that much water, or drain and replinish that much water.
And If I put a table spoon of nutes in 6 gallons of water every 4 or 5 days, or use 16 ounces for a 6 gallons of water, how much nutes will you need for 54 gallons?
You would need 9 gallons of GROW nutes, 9 gallons of Micro nutes,and 9 gallons of Flowering nutes. 27 gallons of nutes total. I pay $29 a quart, so you'll need 4 qts X 27 gallons X $29 = $3,132 for nutes????

and 4 gallons of pH Down and 4 gallons of pH UP MIGHT be enough?????

the tote is not rez what dont you understand about that? will not need to control 54 gallons of water because it is where my roots will be hanging. thanks for the advice anyways

I guess he may have missed the aeroponic description and was thought it was a DWC setup for some reason..
I agree that large setups can run from a small res, a 1500gal aero root chamber could run for 24 hours on a 15 gal res without running the same water through twice.
I don`t agree that a 54 gal res would be a less stable for temperature and PH than a smaller res though, the more water you have the more stable it will be.

Getting a little worked up for nothing here roseman... He is not going to be using 54 gallons of water, the 54 gallon tote is where the roots will hang. There will be a drain in the bottom of that 54 gallon tote so that the water sprayed onto the roots can drain back to the smaller rez. This is aeroponics not bubbleponics or DWC

I have the same setup i made a week ago and it works wonderful. I started my plants in soil and transfered them over to the aero setup. My plants are under 2 24inch flouro tubes and they grew more the last five days then the month I had it in the sun. The Problem is that I top off the res with a gallon of ph balanced water evry day and i think my plants drink more than a gallon of nute sollution a day so i would get 2 tops to the res to conduct an expierament of my own it depends on how much time u have on your hands to conduct maintinace on your garden. If 32 Is too much then switch to 8. but im doing a sog so im trying 32. it all depends wat u wanna do. the system is hard work though since we're both new at we should keep in contact to swap advice as we go along

oh yeah I also dont use 3 inchnet pots i use 2 inch mesh pots because u dont need as much media for aeroponics thats an advantage of the system from wat i read if anyone with more experience knows otherwise feel free to correct me but i think its pretty acurate info my plants are all between 9 and 12 inches and sofar sogood

I don't understand why people thought you wanted 54 gallons of res? I thought you were clear in stating that you were building an aero system with a 54 gal. tote. To answer your question, it determines on how long you are planning on vegging those plants. Being a newbie, I over grew my 2" net pots in a flash. "Aero's fucking fast" If you planned on vegging them to 12" I'd go with about 4-6 3" cups. Also, you can put in more cup sites and just not use them all. How tall are ayou gonna veg these girls?

A lot depends on your strain, how you plan to prune (FIM, supper crop, lollipop, SCROG), but as a general rule of thumb I would make your holes at least 2 times the size of your net pots on center. i.e. 2 inch net pots, separate by 4 inches on center. This should allow for the plants to have enough space for their root mass and lateral growth.

Just my $0.02

i also wanted to do the screen of green. i got this idea based on the seemorebuds dvd. his plants were very close together and he had amazing results. i wanted to put 32 as well hopefully getting a zone off each plant. 2 peezos for every tote. i havent even bought any of the supplies yet, im still researching but this seems like my best bet. let me know how your op is going and what problems you ran into while making it. thanks for the advice
