Sound proofing?

So my 4in inline fan sounds like a turbine engine. I need to sound proof the room so that the fan isnt so loud in the other room. I was thinking of just putting egg crate foam on the far wall of the grow room (the one that backs up to the other room) has anyone had any succes with this??? The room is big so the foam is not going to be anywhere near the lights or the plant.

Id like to know also, i was thinking of getting a 6 or an 8 inch but I cant have anything much over 45-55db to cool my grow area, its about 3x6 feet.

How is the fan mounted? It may tone it down if you suspend it with bungees.

I've tried everything.. its just too loud. I even held it in my hand up in the air while someone else listened in the other room and it is much too loud. I'm gonna have to figure out a way to dampen the sound

there are some things you can control and somethings you cannot. try some oil or another lubricant throughout the moving pieces before you go to other extremities. fans generally aren't as loud as the wind they create. what is the type of sound you are hearing? whoooshing or whizzing?

The sound is similar to a turbine engine. I dont think its the wind.. its the fan itself, but its not like it needs lubricant, its just a loud sound like an air conditioning unit. I'm gonna try the foam on the wall thing, hopefully it works.

My 6 in vortex fan is loud as shit too, The guy at the hydro store told me to buy it cuz its quieter, i plugged it in in my kitchen and it was loud i was think wtf?
After i mounted it and turned it on its loud as shit in the room, but in the next room cant hear shit and outside, sounds like a dryer but quieter, can only here it when youre right under it. also curious why it has to be that quiet? dont want your mom to hear it?

Lol yes its my parents in the next room, the fan is LOUD and it will disturb their sleep. They are ok with the grow, but the fan has to be remedied. Its much too loud in their room, I can understand where they are coming from. They are easy going and dont care about the grow, but they DO care about the noisy fan (who wouldnt)

I ahve no idea if this will work but thinking about you problem you could try some dynamat. Not sure if you know what it is, but its like this rubbery thin stuff, that you usually put in your car or trunk or where ever to make you sound system sound better, but you might be able to put that on the outside of the fan to dampen the noise, again i ahve no idea if that will work.

try biulding a wooden crate around the fan with holes for the ducting and just fill it with what you are going to use

Muffle the sound by building a seperate box around the inline fan,with 2 in and out vents so it will just take the size of horse you need.On the inside of the box line it wit egg cartons this will help with the sound.But you will find that by haveing the fan not resting on anything none of this will be needed use rubber rings to hold the fan of any surface. So that the fan is hoverig in the air it is normaly vibration that causes the most noise not the fan.Also the lagging that plumbers use is also good to stop any vibrating put some on the bottom of the fan[The tube kind]Slice it down the middle and put it on the bottom of the fan.Don't worry so much about the noise in the room go into a other room next to it and see if you can ear it.The chances are that anyone liveing next to you will not be able to ear a thing because there is a course of bricks then a caverty then another course of bricks.I would say that you are thinking that it can easy be heard by neighbours but there is a 70% chance it can't.The rubber ring thing is great for any hanging of any grow equipment it realy cuts down on the noise.

As far as the dynamat, i was talking more about just putting it on the fan itself, i like the box idea though, i think im gonna do that myself.

it's not the fan vibrating against any surface that is causing him problems, it's the mechanics of the fan itself. just get a new cheap ass $10 fan.

I cut my blower noise in half by wrapping some fiberglass insulated duct wrap around it, and securing it with a couple pieces of twine. If the sound is coming from the exhaust end, put a duct muffler on it.

If all else fails I would enclose it in an insulated box (or cooler), with a hole cut in each end for intake, and exhaust.

Actually, it was the AIR making the noise. I attached duct work out the ceiling and it was still loud as hell, so I took a foot long piece of vent and stuck it on the intake end of the fan and it muffled it nicely.. sound is no longer a problem
