Booster Fans

Hey guys I am have a small closet grow going that is 5 x 2 x 8 with a 400w hps that has 6 inch flanges. That equals out to 10sqft and 80 cubic ft. I heard on a grow room calculator that I would need about 74cfm for optimum ventilation. But I have heard of 400w users using 270cfm+ fans? So I have been looking at some "booster fans". They claim to have generally 150-180cfm. They also claim that they shouldn't be used alone. why can't they be used alone? They are a cheaper alternative to buying a $150 inline fan thats 400cfm.

My main questions are.

Will a 150-180cfm booster fan be enough to ventilate a 5 x 2 x 8 room with a 400w hps?
Would a booster fan be quieter then an inline fan?
Is a booster fan strong enough to ventilate by itself or will it just break down?
Would it just be a better idea to bite the bullet and shell out an extra $100 for an inline fan?

Better to shell out the extra dough for an overkill in-line fan. My space is the same size as yours, and I had no problem cooling it (with 400w) with an S&P TD-200x. great fan, and quiet. Run it on the low speed, and wrap it with some insulation, and you'll forget it's in there.

Booster fans don't have the power necessary to draw air through carbon filters. Thats why they are "booster fans".

I have two 4 inch booster fans I picked up from Home Depot, and they are quiter than my inline fan, but they also don't move the same amount of air an inline does.

i have a friend growing with basically the same set up, 400w in a small dark room tent. He just uses a 120 volt 120mm computer fan and i guess it exhaust the heat good enough. But one Oz could pay for a nice Vortex 4" fan and put a Phat filter on the end of it.
