Ive had a similar experience, I was fishing for pike. I felt a little tug on the end of my line and set the hook, it wasnt fighting hard then all of a sudden rod reels over and holy fuck its something big. I get it close to the boat and its a decent size pike, except the pike swims off.... and im left with only the head of a sunfish on my line.

Back in my college days, i worked for my dad and he got the crew a condo in cocoa beach for the summer as we were building a nursing home over there. I quickly got to know some of the locals and this one guy had a fantastic house right on the banana river. On the weekends, I'd go over to his dock with a bag and a cooler full of beer and a camping light with a rope attached. Lower the light about a foot above the water on the end of his long dock and sit back with a jay and a beer and wait about an hour. First come the baitfish, and then the Trout. So after catching like 30 trout we run out of bait, but it's still a crazy amount of fish running through the baitfish so I throw an empty hook in there and WHAM...trout. It got to the point where we could pick the one we wanted. There was a restaurant down the road that paid us a buck a fish. :lol: Like I said, i don't fish anymore but I have done a heck of alot of it.

St. Lawrence river off of lake ontario has nice muskie, other then that, the Kawartha's (Noth of Lake Ontario), and Lake St. Claire (by Lake Huron) have awesome muskie fishing... Still have yet to catch one...

SOWAS THE SALMON 15LBS OR 60LBS LMAO.

i am a very keen and experienced fisherman, have been for 20yrs solid, u cant beat a salmon caught on a fly rod, or a big sea trout on a fly rod at night.

if u are talking about fly fishing, the best way to learn with success is either fishing a buzzer just under the surface about 6-18 inches if the fish are rising or fishing a goldhead lure on a floating line, retriving with medium pasted smooth pulls. i could go on all n ight about fly fishing , different methods and anything u wanted to kno realy, been fishing for 20yr solid and still loving it, u cant beat the feeling of ur first big monster fish, ESPECIALLY ON A FLY ROD!!!
 
Damnit all this talking about toking and fishing... I'm going to have to sit and play Rapala fishing tonight on my X-Box since it's too damned hot to go out and fish.

i wanna catch a muskie so bad. i see them on the fishing channel all the time and they give a great fight.

yeah thats what i hear! lotta meat not too many bones right? but i just go fishing in retention ponds around my house. and its just bluegill, pan fish, small mouth bass large mouth bass and catfish. these fish arent good to eat though. they are dirty cuz all the run off water goes into these lakes....

well man lets start with your general location and species you want to catch. if you want to use a fly lure your going to have to learn how to use a fly rod. its not too difficult i picked up at it withen 30 mins of practice, but it takes a lot longer than that to really use it. im going to suggest you just go with a basic spin setup for now. im not telling you you cant fly fish its just harder and like you said your a beginner.

im only 19 years old but i consider myself an accomplished fisherman. ive caught every thing from peacock bass to muskie. (the best fishing is muskie fshing) my dads been taking me fishing since i can remember, my uncle is an accomplished tournament fisherman and we all talk about fishing all the time so go ahead ask me some ?'s relative to your situation im sure i can help.

i also have been fly fishing quite a bit, i can even tie my own flies...

fishing is one of the BEST things to do while high im sure if you get into this as a hobby you wont be let down.

That actually depends on the body/type of water your fishing. I've had some of my best ever days fishing in the rain. Even though it sucks getting soaked, the fish don't care.

steelhead and salmon are where its at! silver rockets baby!

Heres my float reels. Expensive ass hobby, but there is no fishing style more effective for steelhead/lake run trout than float fishing in my opinion. Once you get the hang of it ten fish days are the norm.

Ones a kingpin and ones painefalls. I love them, got another custom pfalls on order. 515$ things are bulletproof though

i live in florida and i fish every chance i get. used to work commercial fishing boats when i was younger. but i caught a 15 ft hammerhead once on a 12/0 reel and a herrington rod. moved some years ago so i mainly bass fish now. still like 45 mins from the saltwater. if you wanna fish bigtime. go to the ten thousand islands. go to naples fl and book a guide and you wont want to leave after you hook a few fish there. fishing down there is so easy cuz theres so many fish. theres been times i stopped fishing cuz i was tired of catching fish every cast and needed a break
 
u guys get into much baramundi fishin? Great fun they put on a good fight n great show haha great to just sit back with a livey in the water n a drink n spliff :)
 
Wow i didnt know there was so many fisherman up in here, guess i shoulda figured since certain smoke makes you wanna sit down but also do something heh. Well since my post ive been around, bought some lures (not sure if the lady sold me the lures or i bought them lol) tryed a few different situations like time of day/temperature/current speed. Last set of lures i bought were weighted hooks that were custom built to slide a fake worm onto, looks awesome when jiigged but i kept getting caught on the bottom (funny she told me to reel that one in exuastingly slow hmmm). Next i got just a larger hook with another fake worm but she told me if i keep getting snagged up to rehook it back into the worm soz to not have anything that might get caught up, but that makes me curious isnt the fish gonna spit it out before it pushes the hook thru and gets caught? Anyways so then i started talking to fisherman around town(always passing to the left) and they told me to get some of those 2 piece lures to make the fish look broken and dont let it touch bottom, been having decent luck with em. So after me and my girl started putting more energy into study and less into reeling in the bass i went and got some minnows,and vwahla reeling in the bass =). But im not sure im in the right places at the right times, but im still enjoying tracking down new spots (seems half the fun). I live in CT in US if you have like a google earth or wanna see "CT fish"<---comes up if searched. Been doing alot of fishing in lake zoar out here seems to be a popular fishing experience, sometimes i head to a little pond so my girl can feeed the fish, she'll litterally hang the worm in the water and chase sunnies but hey...she likes it lol. Anywho im gonna go on a saltwater charter with a few buds (both kind hehe) and have some fun about 100 miles out into Long Island Sound, hopefully ill have some good picks. Thanks guys for all the info, took me ahwile to read it all but it was all a great help!!! Burn it slow!!!

Yup thats it, i was using a thicker worm maybe i should go thinner since ill probably have a better chance catching a smaller fish then a larger one. But ya man im having a blast, hopfully next year ill have more time to dedicate to it, nothing better then practice with some fisherman. Now ima go study up abit on that sight hehe thanks man
