600w Bulb in 1000w Ballast?

Hi guys,

I have a question that will help me save alot of money, if its true.

I was thinking about getting a 1000w ballast and using a 600w bulb. Eventually I plan on going for the full 1000w bulb, but the cab I have right now is too small for 1000 watts.

Has anyone done this before? I've read up on other forums to see the legitimacy of this issue, but it seems like people are coming to conclusions based on theory and not actual application.

I've heard that the govt uses bigger ballasts for their bulb to increase longevity, but I also hear the exact opposite.... saying that it will cut down the life of the bulb.

Im stuck in limbo.

No one?!?!
We've all been waiting for you to come along and give this a try - let us know how it works out for you!

Personally; I've never tried it because everyone, that seems to know what they're talking about, says it's not a good idea (for several different reasons). You know what they say about things that sound too good to be true, don't you?

They've got dimmable ballasts, from 1/4-1/2-3/4-1 strength,u might wanna check those out.So if you have a 1000W bulb, you can turn ballast down to 1/4 strength to give you 250W without destroying your bulb or ballast, hope this helps,peace...

Awesome. Imma invest in a Dimmable Ballast for next grow.

I ended up getting my hands on a 600W switchable ballast. I think it'll work well.

Three ebb/flow hydro plants and about 8 soil plants in the same tent. I had to utilize all of the space! lol
