Opinions on hydro medium

I use both. I find the rockwool retains water better then hydroton.
If you want small plants, say 2 feet tall then stay in rockwool. When the roots try and grow out of it they will die. called air pruning.
Rockwool you can water every couple days. Hydroton should be watered more often.
I have recently switched to aeroponics but I found the best way to start a plant clone or seed is in rapid rooter plugs. They are about an inch around. Then fit them into the 3 inch square rockwool cubes. They will keep for about two or three weeks then roots come out of the bottom. That's when I move them to hydroton.
Bury about half the cube in hydroton. The more hydroton you have for a root system the larger the plant can get. For say a 3 foot tall plant, about 6 inches of hydroton. Water the rockwool 30 min twice a say on a drip up intill the third or fourth week of flower then move the water to the Hydroton split into two lines and water 24/7
I kept journals, check it out if ya want.

When I started my first grow I used a combo of rockwool and hydroton. I was almost completely unsuccessful at cloning with rockwool (see the journal in my signature). I ended up going with an aero-cloner (no problem getting clones to root in the aero-cloner) and pots of hydroton. I just bury the rooted clones in a pot of hydroton and add them to either my flood/drain (flower) or dripper system (veg).
Once you rid yourself of rockwool you no longer have to worry about your flood depth (never flood rockwool cubes), no more putzing around with pre-conditioning cubes, and no more ugly/funky looking rockwool cubes.
Just my perspective after completing my first grow...
