General Q's for Indoor vs Outdoor

all comments much appreciated and needed. i'd like to start by saying Thank You.

I currently Live Near the Equator, in a tropical place similar to South America and/or lots like Hawaii. It is a rainy season right now and will be till January. The climate is consistantly upper 60's to upper 80's with HIGH humidity, sunlight and rain.

I have a very safe/secluded spot in the woods/jungle area near where i live that i believe would be perfect for growing, but the soil is shit (so i would dig a giant patch out and fill it back up with 60% potting soil mixed with 40% decent soil from another location). and there are lots of Slugs around (that seems to be the only type of animal besides the occasional spider that lives in this location) not to mention with the season we are in and the humidity there is mold most everywhere. but would it spread to the new patch of land i build with new soil? and would slugs be attracted to any of the plants and harm them?

OR

is it better to grow indoors, i dont know all the equipment need to grow indoors and growing procedures, so i would really like to keep this an outdoor project but i need your expert advice if anything would grow in this enviornment and with the seeds i am planning on using.....

The seeds i plan on using, im not sure where they originated from but they were gathered by my friend in random bags of Mid-grade and Nug's in the Oklahoma area.....Will these seeds which were probably used to indoor growing be able to produce a good crop outdoors in this type of climate with humidity and fungus/mold in the area? and would it be smart to start growing right now (mid july) because what i hear is outdoors takes 90-120 days which would put it right in line with hitting the darker cycle and right in line for advised harvest time

Planting outside during the rainy season doesn't sound like a good idea. It can't be pouring on your girls everyday, nevermind the lack of sunshine. Slugs will have a filed day with your plants too. My advice, grow indoors or wait until the dry season.

the environmental issues (mold, slugs, ect) would still be issues you would have to worry about even if you set up a new lot of dirt to grow in.. there are many strains tho, that are mold resistant, and plenty of products that will keep the snails away.. you just have to do some research on both of those to get the best of either that will work for you... another idea would be to build a greenhouse around the area you are talking about to keep the pests out and limit the effects of the outside environment.. but with humidity being high it might not be a good idea, not to mention it takes any "stealth" away from the grow...

growing indoors can be costly.. depending on how easy it is to control the environment indoors and how much you want to put into it... you have to worry about intake and exhaust of air fresh and stale air, air circulation within the grow room, lights, heat, humidity.. pretty much every aspect of the grow is under your control.. it just depends on how much it takes to control all the aspects...

ive seen successful outdoor grows in regions like you describe, but they also have their fair share of problems.. the thing i dont like about outdoors is you are at the mercy of whatever happens out there... indoors you can, with enough time, knowledge and money, make the environment to whatever you want it to to keep the best suited environment for your girls to grow in... again, it can be costly to grow indoors, but once you get the setup locked in the results are consistent and always in your control...

so its your choice... do you want to spend the money on the equipment, spend the time working on setting up a grow room that you play god in, and ultimately being in control of everything that happens within your grow room... or do you want to save some money, do some research on mold resistant strains and how to ward of pests, and hope that the grow goes smoothly?? one is free/almost free with little control over what happens to your plants while the other can be costly, sometimes VERY costly, but you can control everything from temps to humidity to how long you veg and when you flower??

imho, and personally, i would go with indoors if you can afford it... its work and money in the beginning.. but the pay off is better if your environment is shakey outdoors...

yeah man, listen to simpsonsampson420-good ass advice.
i myself am an outdoor grower and i l recomend you the great nature. a good strain to grow in your conditions will be early girl-really resistant and fast flowering too.and remember, in the great nature, there are no elecricity bills :)

Yeah, the more research i do the more expensive i find indoor to be. I am on a little bit of a budget and the risk is possibly too high for attempting an indoor project. It sounds great to play god with your crop but this will be at a location i am not always at and would be difficult to give it the attention it would require...

Outdoors really is what im going for.. Is there any more advice you fellas might have as far as this mold problem ? (early girl is one, thankyou) I know human hair/blood keeps animals away, already got that taken care of ( i know a barber) and i will purchase any repelant it would require to keep slugs/snails/crabs/spiders/snakes away because those are the only animals in the area... Is the rainy season really a bad time to plant ? theres still lots of sunshine throughout the week and such. Its about 400 feet above sea level if that matters for the water table but there is enough rain, even in the non rainy season since its an island it rains on different spots of the island at least once a day.

Should i not use the seeds im being provided with? the ones from oklahoma that were most likely produced indoors growing for years on that strain? or should i buy some off the net? i would really like to give the oklahoma ones a shot because the climate is much like hawaii and should have the potential of thriving.

i also will have about 50 seeds to play with that hes sending... and im not TOO concerned about the outcome because i seek opportunity here. Its unbelievable here because each J is 20$ and its typicaly some midgrade / low grade nug, and each J is rolled up at .3g so its expensive to be a stoner here and there is an amazing amount of profit to be made even with decent looking buds and small amount produced.

thanks again for the quick replies!!!!

WTF a J for 20 bucks? I am moving down there right now.. where do you live and can i stay with you? Ill bring my indoor equipment and we can have a field day

im not even kidding bro.. i got a 3 bedroom apt and only 1 is being used ;)

but ya, i thought at first i was being ripped off when i first moved here...thats not the case, everyone at work, everyone i talk to, its 20 a J w/ .3g in it.... ive done my research and ive been a long time smoker.. i thought i'd never grow cuz of the risk involved. but with the money to be made its well worth it... im gonna market 50$ for a g and just get rid of it in no time ... thats y i really need any help i can get reguarding a hawaii type climate growing outdoors

yea.. indoors can be quite expensive... its costing me a lot more than i had initially planned.. but ive been riddled with issues.. and it seems every issue is solved when the money comes out of my pocket... LOL the nice thing is once its all set up and done, its just general maitainence... high initial cost.. lower long term maintainence cost...

anyways.. if outdoors is what you want then i say go for it... the rain is a bit of a concern.. MJ, by nature, likes to go from wet to dry... staying perpetually wet, or overly moist, can cause issues such as root rot and slow growth... if you want to grow outdoors try to find a place that rains the least... being above sea level will help with drainage.. but you could still have issues...

one idea to get around this would be to put drainage stones in the hole you dig.. a couple inches of rocks lining the bottom of the hole you dig will help with the rain issue... also if you mix some perlite in with the soil you back fill with to assist further in drainage it will help.. maybe 20 percent perlite?? sounds like that is going to be the biggest issue to overcome...

here are a couple links to some different pest/mold products.. just to help you out there http://www.wormsway.com/products.aspx?t=prod&cat=PESTI&AC=1 http://www.wormsway.com/products.aspx?t=prod&cat=PESTM&AC=1 there are plenty of things you can get to take care of either of those 2 problems... both are fairly easy to avoid and fix...

the humidity, even if its high, shouldnt matter too much as long as you have good breezes outside.. being an island i would venture to guess there is never a lack of air movement tho... as long as there is air movement the humidity will become less of an issue..

as far as seeds go.. its hard to say.. if you are getting the seeds free from oklahoma then yea, try them... it cant hurt.. and it will give you a good basic knowledge of how the next grow will go... things to watch out for.. things you need to work on.. ect.. i think you would benefit from purchasing a strain that is made for outdoors and you know is mold resistant just to be safe.. but you might as well use what you have available and see how things go first!!

just curious if its too late to start it right now? if i get things going by July 15th that should put me right on time for the proper harvest time for these buds. It does rain more often at this part in the season, but it WILL stay high 70's to high 80's with sunlight. it varies from 20-40% clouds from week to week and same with the rain.... mostly when theres a cloud its cuz its gonna rain, and only on parts of the island. its a smidge below hawaii on the lines of Latitude if that gives you an idea of what kind of climate im dealing with, and its above australia

like MG said, go for it.. no time like the present.. plus, if you learn how to control your issues during the hardest part of the season (when its rainy), growing the rest of the season will be a breeze... its kind of a big learning curve to adjust to.. but nothing that cant be solved with a little research and question asking...

sugestgen if its rains that bad, get your self sum P V C pipe, bend it over your plants like a u shape stick the ends in the ground, then take sum 6ml plastic and put over your plants. leave the ends open for air flow.wala a little makeshift greenhouse. just to keepthe rain off. on nice days remove the plastic.
