I hear you F. I don't believe in them either but I put 2 inches of sand on top of all my pots for bug control and light reflection from the bottom up and I can't get my fingers in there very well. Plus with all the textures and depth, my fingers got confused.

they can goes days without water. they can go until the leaves start to get dry and crisp. if the leaves never gets dry or crisp but it wilts and you water it it will perk right up.

This is pretty much my same method, i keep an eye on my leaves when i see them start to droop its a sure sign they are thirsty, i then sit my plant in a bucket with about 4/5 inches of my water or mix and leave standing for around 10 mins, the plant draws up from the bottom/roots from the bucket just what it needs, i spray the top soil just a little to keep it from drying, but in the future iam going to start and put a layer of clay balls over the top, ive read it works well.
