You can start now. Usually it is safe after the second true set of leaves come out. When you do.... don't go full strength. strat at 1/4 the label rate and gradually move up from there. They are small and don't need a lot. When they want more, they will tell you.

This year I am using two different ferts for two different grows.

My first is a time released Nursery PRO fert. of 18-7-10

The other is an organic of 8-4-4

I start both when they are seedlings with another professional nursery product liquid of 8-32-5 with humic acid added. This really makes them strong from the get go so they can handle the time released.

I'll pull the label tomorrow and post it for you. It's called Origin. I buy it in 2.5 gallon jugs. As a spray for established turf, it really shines at a rate of 3 oz. per gallon. I cut that by a one sixth for a first feed. Just something I've worked out. It's not really weed specific as to plant size specific.

i'm thinking of topping once they get a little older so they make more then one cola, after how many sets of leaves are you supposed to top also do you guys think i shouldn't top since they'll be outside?

If you top after the fourth true sets of leaves, you can get as many as four colas.

Uncle Ben has a great thread on making four colas. It works.....

Transplanting should be done when the roots are hitting bottom. Stunting or delay of growth can only occur if a container becomes root bound. Most trees will never recover their real potential, but weed will. Most grasses will as well. It may delay it, but not stunt it. So, better to be a bit late then too early.

If you feel that the plant has 'taken" the pot (heh, pot), then gently turn it upside down (about 60 degrees downward will suffice) and slide it out and have a look at it. If you start to see an accumulation of roots near or at the bottom, then go ahead and transplant. If you don't just gently right the plant and no harm, no foul. I find it always best to maintain a rhythm when growing any plant.
