Is this normal? Another "reassure a noob" thread...

Okay, so I've got a few seeds that I planted directly into a compost/potting soil mix about a week ago.

So far, just one has sprouted above the surface of the soil but it's very strange (to me, anyway).

This little sprout is wearing his seed shell as a hat? It looks like a seed on a stem, basically. The stem is about 1/4 inch, give or take a centimeter, nice and sturdy and all - but what's with the seed shell hat?

I've seen sprouts come out of the soil with parts of the seed still attached, but this one takes the cake.

Is this normal?

I went to water my babies yesterday, and this little guy had just laid down in his pot like he was going to give up. I covered him with a little soil, and by the end of the day he was standing straight up again - but still wearing his hat.

This isn't exactly normal, but it happens. I've had to remove a couple seed shells. Be extremely careful not to damage the tiny leaflets because it's game over if you do.

Hey thanks for the reply. I figure I'll give it another couple of days and if the seed shell is still there I might try and pull it off. Just some bag seed anyway, so no real loss there.

One of the 2 plants I got growing right now came up with the full shell on it still. Other came up with half the shell. I waited like a day and gave the half a shell a lil nudge with a paperclip and it fell right off. That night I did the same with the full shell, was a bit harder to get off but came up without any damage to the plant.

Same happend to one of my plants but after time nature took its course and the shell fell off on its own, I attempted to nudge it off a few times but it did not seem to want to go anywhere. If it comes off great, if not oh well it will come off on its own, no big worry here dude. :leaf:

Well, I did it. One half of the seed shell came off pretty easily, but I can't get the other half off without smooshing the sprout up. Hopefully now that half of it is gone, the leaves will start to unfurl and just push the other half off.

Thanks everyone kiss-ass
