there is a document that is sent out every year by the UN called the world drug report. If you have some time read that section on MJ. starts on page 161. you need adobe to read it. summarized, we will not legalize it if we want to be a part of the UN, we signed some agreement that says we wont. they did bring up about it being classified with herion. was interesting.

well the reason its not legal is because big pharma like pfizer cant put it in pills and be the exclusive maker of it, they would much rather put you on ambien or paxil or any of the other drugs you cant really make at home, i mean if it was trully public safety they had in mind then i dont think there is another drug on earth with a track record as good as pot, i mean shit asprin kills thousands yet a kid can walk in and buy it so its proof positive that its money they are after not well being of the people

It seems that a lot of the figures are nothing more than what they called in the book, "informed guesses".
The leaders of the free world, restricting peoples rights based on "informed guesses".

Its none of these flat out the only reason its not legal is because that would mean every politician and reggen admins and the antipot baby boomers would basically be sayin "we were wrong" which won't happen. Thirty years from now we will be smokin without a care cause they will all be dead. Though it will be labeled the same as tobacco making it like fuckin manslaughter if ur caught growing so I say keep the laws as they are cause if we don't stfu its only gonna get worse

It probably originally had more to do with the commercialization of hemp and what it could have done to the paper industry instead of the big pharma. I would say Today Big pharma has a big stake money wise with drugs that attempt to recreate the effects of MJ. You can't patent a plant, so they just keep it illegal by paying lobbyists and contributing massive amounts of money to like minded political candidates campaigns . I say big tobacco has more interest here. They have the farm land and the argiculture to get it done... They also have the lobbyists and the $$$$

Marinol isn't actually made from cannabis at all.

It's a synthetic THC, made in a laboratory.

Ya know, Big tobacco has copywritten all the major brand names of pot, like Acapulco gold, Thai weed, Panama red, Columbian gold, etc. With all the new names of pot, white widow, ruderalis, etc., I think they will have to compete with the backroom grower. I definently can't see legalization in the near term. Most liberals would vote for it, but those cob up the ass conservatives would never let that pass.

confused on one point - it's legal in Holland, and the Netherlands is in the UN, so why couldn't it be legalized in another UN country? genuine curiosity!

The Opium Act states very clearly that every part of the hemp plant is banned except for the seeds – this is in accordance with many of the international treaties which the Netherlands have signed.

Much like the original OP said, they cannot legalize marijuana due to international treaties.

They may not be able to "legalize" marijuana due to the treaties, but decriminalization IS an option even under the treaties. The UNODC (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime) just put out their annual report, which praises Portugal's approach to curbing drug use and related crime. For anyone who doesn't know, Portugal decriminalized possession of small amounts of drugs back in 2001, I think.

So, even if outright legalization can't occur just yet, decriminalizing possession of small amounts of drugs isn't out of reach.

Antonio Maria Costa is the Executive Director of the UNODC (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime). He's considered, the UN drug Czar.

If you just read the preface of the World Drug Report, you can instantly see how tendentious, close minded and absurd his ways are. He contradicts himself quite often.

There's this open battle between Dr Pollak, and Mr Costa you should all check out. Dr Fredrik Pollak, a respected dutch psychiatrist, asked Costa one simple question through the years, and in many different scenarios. The question is: "How do you explain that in the Netherlands, where cannabis is legally available for adults, the average level of use is the same than in the rest of the EU, and lower than in UK and U.S.A.? Doesn't the example of the Netherlands show the futility of Drug Prohibition?

Its a good question, that Mr Costa just seem to can't handle... Check out this link, and watch the videos. Its amazing...
