400w Cabinet grow you can count on needing the following as a starting point:

400w Ballast/Light/Hood. This should be air cooled for your setup.

4" inline fan for the intake. Should be about 275cfm.

6" inline fan for exhaust. Should be about 360-400cfm

Regular household fan that you can use to move air around inside the closet. Use your judgement on this, it's just to help keep the air moving in your cab and should blow between the bottom of the light and tops of the plants.

For Soil:
Non-fertilized potting soil.
Vermiculite
Perlite
Square Pots will work best. Should be able to get 1x1 square pots if you can as they will fit your room nicely.
PH Meter

For Hydro (preferred method):
PH Meter
PPM Meter
Trays (I would use 1x3 leach trays as they are cheap and effective in this environment).
Reservoir - Find something the can hold about 10 - 15 gallons of water without risk of leaking or cracking
-Submersible water pump (small one from Home Depot does the job, I think it's $15.00)
-1/2" tubing

Now what you need to do is search youtube for "Mr. Green Grows" and watch the entire series. Pretty good info there on the basic concepts.

When you start flowering (regardless of soil or hydro) you are going to need to put the 6" inline fan on a Can-66 size filter. This should last you quite awhile and will easily control the odors.

I would expect that getting started usually costs between $1000-$1500 by the time all is said and done. But after that it gets much cheaper and the rewards are plenty.
what would be a good estimate if i wasnt to do hydro bcuz i think that im just going to use soil... how much will it cost me for that setup?

Still going to be looking at $800-$1000

Expect the light w/ ballasts and hood to be about $250.00

Carbon Filter: $180.00

6" Fan: $215.00

4" Fan: $175.00

Going to need a good line of nutes, some square pots and some good soil. Expect that to be about $100.00

Then you should be off to a solid start.

Absolutely for flowering. It's the only way to go so far. I would do veg w/ floro's though. It will get you acclimated to your grow room and keep it from overwhelming in the beginning.

Just start cheap and get the fans, get the room setup and get some decent floro's. I use a T5's as I think they kick ass compared to CFL's.

Then get yourself a good HPS and you're good to go for flowering. Running the HPS for veg is a waste to me.

ok. so i am a first time grower and i am trying to set up my entire closet to be my grow space... my closet is about 5 feet wide, 2 feet deep, and 8 feet tall... there is a shelf in it but i plan on takin that out so i have more room to grow... what do i need to set up my closet for this? how many plants do u think that i can fit in this size closet? can i use the entire thing as a grow spcae or do i need to build a box? right now all i have is a fan... so what do i need to buy in order for my babies to grow reallly good??

Thanks everyone!!!
thought would offer my advice as i have just built my first closet but have been growing for a while with boxes etc, my first advice get the right light for the space to start with, measure everything and find out the area of the space so you can work out how much light (and later how much air curculation is needed ) spend as much as your happy with on the best light if you can aford it go HPS 400w if you can afford the electricity or even 250 would be sweet ( iam using 250 duel spec HPS light ) if not go cfl 300 watt ....

but and then you need to consider temp and air. if you have an inline fan already i would get a cool tube light fitting, fit the fan to that, sweet, jobs a good un, temp is kept down and light can get closer to the plant meaning more light more bud, as for pots and way of growing my advice go soil or canna cocco with all there nutrients its easy to work with and hard to mess up and its good old dirt.....
as for style of grow i would try SOG or scrog for the space and size you have either style has its pros and cons. i have been using scog method for a while now about to try sog using 8 x 1 gallon square pots in the space i am using will see how it goes . all info on this stuff check out the facts section of the sight!!!!!
if you have not already, dont take out the top shelf!! as this will be good for the filter and fans to go and could even insulate it all to keep noise down you have loadsa hight to play with......

have you thought on the type of weed you wanna grow or the type of high you wanna get and then work out type of plant etc....... doing it right the first time makes lots of difference asi have found out the hard way a few times buy weed that will grow well in ya box and you will be able to contole it haha

my last buit of advice download the cannabise gorw bible by greg green try the link http://trava.kiev.ua/doc/The_Cannabis_Grow_Bible_by_Greg_Green.pdf if not put it into google its worth its wate in gold the info in there is amazing and read lots hope its been some help.......

Well you a very fortunant fellow to have so much nice room to grow as compared to what some of us are working with. I think you could do a 1000 HPS/MH switchable combo for the main light. I would forget the scrog sog stuff. Do Hempy buckets. You should be able to get 12 15 nice size plants going in there easy. Send the mylar back and paint it white like the man say. To vent it use a cheap bathroom exhaust fan and vent to the attic or crawl space. Buy a wad of small kid plastic swimming pools to set the HB's in so it dont mess up your floor. Maybe about 3 buckets per pool or something like that. Bucket size optional. Should be able to do 5 gallon containers easy. Cheap growing medium is some stuff called "Turface." About 10 bucks for 50 lbs (way cheaper than Pearlite and works just as well). Snag 3 big jugs of Botainacare NP 17: Grow, Bloom and Ripe. About 25 bucks a jug at the hydro store. Should last a long time. I do nutes on day 1, Mollases (2 capfuls per gallon of ph'd water) on day 2 and a ph water flush on day three then start all over again. I'm fixing to incorporate a Clearex flush about once a week in addition to the above. Happy growing.

To be honest I would either order the lights from HTGSupply or on ebay. If you go the ebay route, buy something decent (usually the lumatek packages are good) not one of the crappy bat-wing reflectors.

laser... do u think that this is a good one?

High Tech Garden Supply
That's the idea, but I'm thinking you want something that reflects a little wider. Because your closet is only 2" deep, but it's 5" wide you want a reflector that will ideally spread the light as wide as you can and turn the light perpendicular to the room.

If you run it parallel and you have good reflectivity it will be strong in a very small space.

yea. i was planning on running it parallel to the long walls so it puts out more light. and i have some mylar to put up so that should help... and do u think that i could just buy the light setup for right now and keep adding on when i get the money? or should i just buy it all at once? bcuz it adds up to be $564.09 and i dont have that much to spend right now... so could i just buy the light set up(bulb, ballast, hood, reflector) for now and i will buy the inline fans when i get more money?? and for the time being i would just put my 3 speed fan in the closet to keep it cool... will that work for now?

I'm not sure to tell you the truth. Personally, I buy the lights first. I see how the temp's are and I buy fans accordingly. It's hard to buy fans first only to find that you didn't get strong enough fans.

ok. so it would proply be best to just by the lights first anyways?? i am planning on getting a Digital Electronic 400 watt HPS and MH Ballast, AgroMax 400 watt High Pressure Sodium Bulb, and Euro Reflector. will that work u think?

Just lookin in, as I am in the middle of trying to set up my closet also for my first grow. I watched the mr green videos, and am using that for my basic plan. Will be keeping an eye on what you end up doing with yours also. This is so exciting.....

If you run a 400wer just be prepared to spend on some fans. The 400's going to require a pretty good fan to keep a 2" wide closet cool.

If you need more time to get all of the shit together I would get some CFL's and get the process started with those. It's just going to make it easier to judge what's going to be needed to ventilate the closet. 400w light you're going to be looking at a 6" inline fan to cool that room. A 4" MIGHT do it, but I would go the 6" to be on the safer side. Expect that to be $275.00ish.

i think that ill just buy the light setup and i will put two of my 3 speed house fans in there until i get the fan... u think that will work? bcuz i will get the fan about 2-3 weeks after i get the lights setup... and i guess i will just open the closet doors like 4 times a day to air it out... u think that will work till i get the fan??

I think it'll cook personally. I think if you leave the door open and you blow the fans just right you might be able to pull it off for a little while. Esp. because the light will be up pretty high.

You can also do a multiple light setup and run the HPS during the cooler hours and run floro's during the warmer parts of the day.
