Those are strange dimensions to work with.. The main things to look at are your lighting and your ventilation. You need to have proper air flow, if you know nothing about this i suggest you check out the FAQ located at the top of this website. YOU CANNOT GROW IN A CLOSET WITH STALE STAGNENT AIR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am not even sure what kind of lighting i would use in that area.. 2 x 5 x 8 ... you could maybe fit 4 or 5 plants but you would only be able to go one deep with them... You could either grab a T5 4' 8 light florescent system, Or a 250 - 400W HPS. If you have tons of money to throw around grab a 400W HPS/MH switchable system and throw a 4' light mover and track in there and do a Sea of green (SOG) in some kind of aeroponics or another hydroponic system.. that would be beastly.. In that case you could grow lots of small plants instead of just a few large ones and maxxxxxxx out that space.. But im guessing you dont have a ton of money laying around, neither do i, join the club.

By the way if you do get a 250W or 400W HPS system YOU WILL NEED TO ADD FORCED AIR TO KEEP IT COOL IN THAT SPACE. Read up on all of the following and once you think you understand read it again..

Read up on Air, Light, Water, Nutrients, and growing medium...

and remember
The only true knowledge is knowing that you know nothing.

Or two 250W HPS's along the length and a SOG or SCROG grow.. that would actually be ownage
ye ai wish i had alot of money to set up the best for my plants but i dont have much money... and i was planning on just growing my plants to be big.. will that work good?? whta kind of lights and ballasts do i need to grow big plants?? i ordered some mylar to cover the walls... should i just put a fan in there?? would that be enough for good air circulation?? and what else do i need to get??

Im growing in a very similar dimension closet as you are planning on. Remember in a small space like this you are going to need to inake and exhaust this space. So just putting a fan in the closet is not going to be a solution to the situation. If you are going to use an HPS light in there temp is going to be an issue. I found that bye simply painting the closet with flat white was the easiest solution rather than trying to put mylar up everywhere, plus cheaper. Build a stand so that you can access your resi on a regular basis without having to move the plants themselves, otherwise water changes will be a nightmare. I wouldnt try to grow big monsters in this space. Take the advice in this thread and scrog or sog for best results. What kind of fan do you currently own??

ok. idk how im going to set up a vent system in there but im tryin to come up with something... and i just have a 3 speed house fan... but it moves alot of air... i dont have much money at all so im tryin to keep it cheap... is there a guide on here for SOG method bcuz i have no idea how to do it...

I've never done it. But, from the FAQ section (yes, it can be hard to find if you don't know where to look):

https://www.rollitup.org/view.php?pg=faq&cmd=category&id=72

Best of luck!
ok. so i really want to try the SOG method but the guide says that i should not start out with seeds if im going to do it... soooo it looks like i have to grow them big first then take clones of a mother plant... so i guess im just gonna set up my closet to grow a mother first then i will switch to SOG.. i just need lights... ideas??? my closet is totally empty everything is cleaned out except for a little storage truck that i am planning to have my plants sit on to keep them off the ground... my mylar sheeting should be here sometime next week so ill get that up and then ill work on getting lights... so i need ideas on some kinda cheap but a very good light set up for growin some big plants at first and then would be able to use for my SOG... ideas??

I grew in virtually the same space my very first time...

I think I have a link to the journal somewhere here....

Ah yes, here it is...

https://www.rollitup.org/indoor-growing/16572-out-old-new-grow.html

If you check the last page of that one it has a link to the flowering part of it also....

I started by building a cabinet inside the cabinet. I did this so that I could create a light sealed growing space. So inside the closet door it would open up to a sealed box and you had to remove the door to the box.

Reasons I did this, I wante to create a 3x2 space to grow in. I used the other two feet OUTSIDE the box to hold my carbon filter and fans and just ran the ducting into the room. By doing this I could have the other (left) closet door open so that it could vent the hot air out. I used the window right next to the closet to pull air in for the intake and hid the entire operation behind my TV Stand.

My roommate had no idea that I grew MJ in there until WAY after it was all done. He was quite impressed with how "stealthy" it was.

My suggestion and my experience in that grow is that you find an air cooled light or use CFL's. I used a 250wHPS (non-air cooled) that had an internal ballast. The thing got pretty damn hot. I ended up using a portable A/C inside the left side of the closet to pull colder intake air and keep things cool. That allowed me to lower my 250w light to about 3" and that made the buds bigger and tighter. BUT right now I'm vegging in a little bit larger closet, but I'm growing on a 2x4 tray with a 6 bulbs T5 fixture and I'm not having any problems keeping that cool.

So the way I would do it is to buy some T5's, some fans and get that running and cool for veg. Then switch to the bigger dogs and run an A/C or find some serious ventilation for flower.

I was able to get about 4 oz's in 8 weeks total (1 week veg, 7 weeks flower) in that setup. Worked for me back then and I had no complaints.

How big do ur plants get when they were veggin for only a week? where can i get the T5's and the ballast to hold them?? you are such a help to me!!! thank you so much!

I run a little different now. I now use a closet and a tent. The closet just for vegging and the tent for flowering under a 600w CFL.

If you use the entire space you have to figure out how you are going to ventilate it furing flowering. As it is I have my closet ventilated for my T5. I drilled a hole in the top of the closet door and one in the bottom of the closet door. I have an intake fan that actually blows directly across the lamps and an extraction fan that pulls from the other side of the room. It just ventilates into the bedroom that it's in and doesn't require any further cooling.

I would get all of the equipment from HTG Supply.

If you use the entire space make sure you think about how you are going to ventilate! I can't stress that enough...

Do you care about being "stealth"? Did you see how stealthy my old closet was? Damn I was good! haha. I know that with T5's if you setup a SCROG you can get pretty decent results, but I would still flower with HID's and that would lean me towards building the cabinet inside the closet. I guess that's just a personal thing, but it gives me a place to put my carbon filter, it gives me a place to put my portable A/C should I need it etc. If you don't mind having those out in the room when they are needed then by all means use the entire space. If you use the entire space you could easily get away with air cooled 400wHPS for flowering and you'll be happy with the results.

400w Cabinet grow you can count on needing the following as a starting point:

400w Ballast/Light/Hood. This should be air cooled for your setup.

4" inline fan for the intake. Should be about 275cfm.

6" inline fan for exhaust. Should be about 360-400cfm

Regular household fan that you can use to move air around inside the closet. Use your judgement on this, it's just to help keep the air moving in your cab and should blow between the bottom of the light and tops of the plants.

For Soil:
Non-fertilized potting soil.
Vermiculite
Perlite
Square Pots will work best. Should be able to get 1x1 square pots if you can as they will fit your room nicely.
PH Meter

For Hydro (preferred method):
PH Meter
PPM Meter
Trays (I would use 1x3 leach trays as they are cheap and effective in this environment).
Reservoir - Find something the can hold about 10 - 15 gallons of water without risk of leaking or cracking
-Submersible water pump (small one from Home Depot does the job, I think it's $15.00)
-1/2" tubing

Now what you need to do is search youtube for "Mr. Green Grows" and watch the entire series. Pretty good info there on the basic concepts.

When you start flowering (regardless of soil or hydro) you are going to need to put the 6" inline fan on a Can-66 size filter. This should last you quite awhile and will easily control the odors.

I would expect that getting started usually costs between $1000-$1500 by the time all is said and done. But after that it gets much cheaper and the rewards are plenty.
