Need a grow room upgrade

I am currently doing a closet grow at a friends house. Our grow closet was designed rather hastily and well small. We have 2 400watt hps in a 7'+3'+8' closet, we have a good intake, carbon filter, and circulation It isnt a bad setup if you don't smoke to much but we do. after two low yielding grows I have finally convinced my friend we need to go bigger. I have just ordered a Lumatec 1000 watt hps/mh E-ballast and a Waterfarm 8 pack. What I want to know is what room dimensions would be adequate for 1 1000watt light as we have decided to remodel the closet? We will only be using the one light (I know there is no way to convince him to run a 400watt fill in also as he is kind of a stubborn fuck set in his own ways which is why we are REBUILDING in the first place) Having as many seeds as I have and the ability to only grow 3 plants at a time really sucks.

What I am asking is how large of a room could I illuminate with 1 1000 watt hps. We are going to make our grow room larger i just dont know how large to make it. right now we have a 7ft by 3ft closet as you know we are somewhat limited by space. I would like to be able to flower 8 plants at a time.

About 20 sq ft is the most you will get from a 1000 if you want appreciable growth. The room you have now is 21 sq ft, and is better suited to a pair of 400s or 600s. You can grow more than 3 plants in that space.
You don't need to grow them huge, flower at a foot to eighteen inches tall and you could get at least 8 in there. There's not much point going much taller with a single/dual light source b/c as you have no doubt noticed, the top 3 feet of the plant grow much more bud than the bottom part. So why waste time and energy growing the plant taller than 3 feet? I would concentrate on honing your growing techniques and improving the setup you have first.
You don't make any mention of the yield you have had so far, good growers strive to achieve 1 gram/watt of lighting, and anything over 0.5g/w is respectable. If you can't get 400g out of that room, going bigger may not be the best course of action.

I agree with hairy bob on the two 400 watters. From what i read 1000 watts can do a 4'x4' space and 6'x6' with help around the edges. Look up see of green.
Hairy bob, is that 1gram/watt per year?

No, per harvest. Or, if you run a perpetual harvest, with say four groups of plants, harvesting ever 2-4 weeks or whenever, then the amount you get from a full growroom, eg; four harvests at 1/4 capacity.
Fwiw, I get 3-400g from four harvests of 2 plants each (so 8 total) under a 600w, flowering at 12-14 inch tall, cheese.
