aquarium waste for nutes

so aquarium scum from filters...this would be considered organic yes? so if i water with this stuff no chance of burning? am i correct here? I have 15 aquariums and lots of sludge i can use........worth it?

are you going to just use the water? OR the sludge from the filters mixed in the water? my HOB's and canisters pads can get pretty filthy with waste...poured a mix in milk jug and it looked like chocolate pudding

Another word for 'fish tank waste' or 'sludge' is 'fish emulsion,' which is actually sold in some garden stores. That shit is GOLD! From what I understand, it's great to mix in with soil or shake it up and feed with water. I also read that human urine is a fabulous and free nute. Search the forums on that. Combine the 2 and you've got plant rocket fuel.

Yes, I would smoke a plant that was watered with some of my urine.

Not only does fishtank waste contain fish emulsion but algae which is a great organic source of growth hormones. Urine is free and high in nitrogen but if you're really going to use it you have to be sure to heavily dilute it or you'll burn the shit out of your plants.

I have a 60 gallon freshwater tank... im about to syphon a couple gallons so how does this fish emulsion work? what are the ratios im interested.....

I would recommend composting it first. Your kitchen compost bin will be greatly fortified by the regular addition of your filter scum.

If that takes too long, mix a teaspoon of sludge to a gallon of water and try it on ONE plant.

BTW, just because something is "organic" does not mean that it will not burn your plants.

Some people swear by it - but to be honest, i've never heard a real good explaination (one that really gets down and gives a detailed account of how it all works!). Maybe some practicioners would like to speak up!

"Fish Emulsion", like Alaska Fish Fertilizer, is a product that is made of all the "leftovers" after the edible parts of the fish have been fileted (fins, skins, heads, scales,tails and guts - all the good stuff!). All this crap is ground up and processed to become "fish emulsion", a very high Nitrogen (and stinky) fertilizer. It's really good stuff, I use it.

Thanks you, you saved me the trouble of typing it! I use my aquarium H2O as the base for my nutes. Not the sludgy stuff, just the clear water. It has a full nitrogen cycle going in it and makes a great base. I add Earth Juice at 1/4 strength and bubble for 48 hrs. This allows the bacteria in the tank water to break down all the organic goodness in the nutes to an available form for the plants. I use this mixture in my hempys once a week (about every third watering) and water with fresh tank water the rest. No smell organic goodness! Make sure to bubble only what you will use on that feeding and dump the leftover on your houseplants. Being organic and full of active culture, the mixture will not store or last more than 24-48 hrs.
