MH+HPS=More Potency, HPS+HPS=More Yield ???

I have a 1000w HPS in a 5x5 room right now... I am either going to add another 1000w or going to replace the 1000w with two 600 watters.

Either way I'm wondering what would be more beneficial for me having one HPS and one MH. OR just having two HPS.

At the moment I am more concerned with yield than potency. So should I get two HPS for flower? Because I feel like I have read that HPS gives more yield than MH. But Im also wondering if MH+HPS will give me a slightly less yield but yet not enough to really notice plus the quality of the buds will be better.

Your opinions and expertise is greatly appreciated.

MH for vegging and HPS for flowering... i have heard that u can use both bulbs to flower and its beneficial.. not sure how correct that is... i run 400's and would ultimately like to get 2 HPS n 1 MH for flowering... and 2 MH and 1 HPS for vegging... not sure but i imagine that would work awesome...

Specific wavelength response diminishes quite rapidly over a certain intensity. You'd be getting better returns and quality with a fuller, equally intense light across the spectrum, rather than double-intense in only one half.

Sorry I don't quite follow... are saying that the MH+HPS is better becuz of the full spectrum I will be getting?

If you have the choice of replacing the 1000 watt with 2 600 watts or adding another 1000 watt then the choice is simple.

ADD the 1000 watt!

Higher penetration, better overall yield, plain and simple. Just keep to the same strategy of MH for veg and HPS for flower, it's a proven method man so don't fuck with it.

True but I am trying to do a SOG with clones and have no veg time... So some people have said 2 1000w in a 5x5 area is overkill since the clones will be short cuz of not vegging. Plus I think the MH will help the clones not to stretch, yet I still want the most yield I can get.

iv heard that one 1000w would yield more in a 5x5 then two 600w, however you would have more resin with a MH+HPS so it would be a personal preference, and instead of two 1000ws in a 5x5 have two 5x5 areas with one 1000w in each

Yes, exactly.

Yield will increase due to HPS(reds), potency increases due to MH(UV & blues), add them together, and you get the best of both.

Doubling up on the HPS(fixed number of plants), you would not double your return, I can promise you that. You'd be lucky to see 1/4th increase.

Thanks a lot Tree! I will def go with MH+HPS... you seem to know a lot of info, do you think 2 1000w will be to much for that 5x5 area? I have an aeroflo2 36 site and are trying to keep my clones small but still yield about an oz each. Do I need that much penetration, or will the 2 1000w def give me the yield I am looking for.

Unless you're adding CO2, it'll mostly be wasted light in such a small space.

i would think 2-1000's would be overkill, will not hurt but 2-400's or 2 -600's would be ok for that size but i would stick with the 1000 hps for 5x5 area, you still have to move around in there too

Yes I will be running Co2 in a sealed environment with an AC running. Since I will have Co2 kicking at 1500ppm during lights on do you think the 2 1000w lights will not be overkill?

Does Co2 increase bud and cola sizes or just make the plants bigger to grow more bud sites?

I am aiming towards having 36 lollipoped "donkey dicks." I would love for each donkey to be putting out 2 oz or more each but I don't know if that is possible without growing them into tall big plants, which my system doesn't allow for since the sites are so close together.

I had a row of 1000 watt hps (5) and I tell you what after even veging until they where at least 18" I wanted to trade them out for 600 watt hps. I like the 600 much more because you can get them closer to the plants and the being the case the 600 hps lights/lumens can over lap each other and Luminate much more.
