It's quite simple, actually....

Have severe, indescribable, inexplicable chronic pain since at least age 2, be very limited in physical activity your entire life although you are as active and athletic as your condition will allow, until the chronic pain/illness becomes so disabling that you're a good 98% housebound (and much of that time is bedridden) by the time you're 30.... and you, too, can obtain a chron card no prob! (I'd rather be healthy and considered a criminal. Not a Pity Party mind you, just sayin'....) Actually, my 19 yr. old son has had chronic headaches for years that quite often go into migraine status, and that purportedly qualifies him, as well. I've also got a friend (who grows the best weed I've ever had and is planning on doing a "seed grow" for me in the somewhat near future or at the least toss me a couple of clones, YAY!) who had a back injury at work from which he still and always will suffer, and that got him his chron card.

You don't have to be dying (or wish you were, lol) to qualify for one in CA, you just gotta have a chronic condition that a prescribing doc deems eligible for a recommendation. NORML.org has a "medical marijuana" link in the left navigation menu, and from there you can find a list of prescribing docs listed by state and from there area of your state.
