I think that Stony pretty much hit the nail on the head.
I run 3 forums (too damned busy for any of them) and the bottom line is while 2 of the 3 aren't associated with any physical business they are businesses in themselves, even if they don't generate enough money to stop working.
The one that's attached to a physical business I'm down right authoritative in keeping mentions of other businesses out of my forum.
It's a sad truth but the competition comes in and maliciously spams our site and posts liable about our business which of course directly effects the income of the main business. If someone mentions our competition in ANY light, good or bad, the post gets removed and they get banned (IP, e-mail, and user name.) I don't give 'time outs' or 'temp suspensions' it's all or nothing, I simply don't have time to babysit every a-hole that attacks my site.
The other two I'm more lenient on, but they're not nearly as busy as RIU and they don't even generate enough to pay their own bills so I don't care as much. It's VERY easy to get banned on one of my sites, harass a member or attack them personally and I gladly invite them to meet the rest of the internet because they're not welcome on my part of it.
No matter what forum is your 'fav' there will always be other people posting negative things about it on another forum. I banned a guy for calling an interracial couple some pretty derogatory names in private messaging. I banned him to the fullest extent of Phpbb3. Four days later I found him saying that I was 'intollerant,' 'unable to meet in the middle,' and therefor everyone should boycott my site. What he didn't know is that I"m good friends with the owner of the other site and after a little conversation he got banned from both our sites.
It's a PITA from an administration perspective. Having done forum administraiton now for 4 years straight I can honestly say that RIU is one of the best managed forums on the net (except for mine of course
.) What was posted on other forums is probably from people who broke the rules, were jerks here, or simply want that site to succeed more than RIU.
I had hoped that a forum of stoners and growers would be one of peace and mellowness but I've found that there are just as many a-holes smoking weed as there are on other non-marijuana related sites. The management here does a really good job and keeping it mostly in check without being to dictatorial. So don't sweat what you've seen elsewhere.
I look at it this way, you wouldn't walk into McDonald's and start yelling that everyone should leave and go to BK, what that to forums?
