DIY DWC - Northern Lights - first timer

Hey guys, iv'e had my hand at some soil grows. Still working on my skills in that area. So here we go...

I got the urge to build one of these kits because i see soo many successful grows. Im really stoked. Im going to be trying this out to see how i like it and if i can pull it off then i will probably build a slightly bigger kit.

The res is a 4 gallon tote and im using just two 3.5" net pots with two 6" airstones. I have two Cheese clones rooting for me right now and i will probably get them in the kit later this week. They will be vegged under a 150w HPS for a week then they will get flipped to 12/12. Im also thinking about doing a SCROG for this grow, seeing as how Cheese is sativa dom. and i know that DWC kits produce rapid growth.

Here are some bad pictures of the kit.

added some reflective tape to the top!

and here is a video for fun :)

Please stick around, i will be updating this grow regularly and i could use some guidence from the hydro pros!

I think thats the plan :) With my basic knowledge of soil, i think ill be able to pull off a full grow with this simple kit. Now im getting excited!

strongly considering a scrog because i have nothing to do the plants down too. I can make a screen no problem, and it seems easy enough to keep the leaves from going through the screen

you could drill screws into the top of your container and tie down with those-but a scrog would work as well

Hey guys, stay tuned. The Cheese clones will be entering the DWC kit this week.

stuboy, ive seen your grow. Impressive for sure. I can see how they take off in the DWC compared to soil. Have you had any problems yet?

also, not sure who makes it. I think it may be Big Budduh

Hey vape, I'm on my first dwc... 5 weeks into flower and I encountered my first problem. All my airstones are totally clogged. Well not all, there are 8 - 1" airstones and all are clogged. There is 1 - 6" airstone that seems partially clogged. I guess some people change their airstones a few times a grow.

I thought I would be safe as I change my rez every 7-8 days, and use stuff to keep the rez 'clean'. I just started using FloraNectar (molasses) so that may have done it... I don't know if they were clogged before or not.

You might want to think about having to change them when setting things up.

Something else I read recently that was interesting (it sounds correct as well, but I don't know). The guy said that it is really easy to tell if you have too many nutes for the plants...

Say you feed them with 5 gal. at 1500 ppm. By the next day they drank 1 gal.

If the ppm has risen (say 1600 ppm) then the plants are drinking water faster than taking in nutes. ie too many nutes (or at least a waste of them).

If the ppm has dropped (say 1400 ppm) then the plants need more nutes than they need water. ie not enough nutes.

If the ppm stays the same. Then you are optimal.

dude its funny you mentioned that about the PPM. I went into a hydro shop yersterday and the guy working there was saying the same exact thing haha. He had me confused a bit but it makes sense. Is your FloraNectar kind of thick and syrupy? I use Liquid CarboLoad from Advanced and its pretty much sugar...really sticky stuff. Id def say thats what clogging your airstones. BTW, how did you mount your airstones?

The Nectar is like the CarboLoad I'm sure... It isn't so syrupy... it's pretty liquidy, but super sticky. It's molasses with sugar added (cause you know there ain't enough in molasses). This shit better be worth it. On the bottle it says it's pineapple flavor so I have high hopes (if it doesn't kill my plants first).

My airstone situation is different. I have a 30 gal tank. I'll post pics, it will take to long to explain.

I have 6 - 1" airstone just hanging below each plant. Then there is the 6" airstone at the bottom. I wanted to have two, but my other one broke... so I had to use 2 - 1" ones instead.

And if you are wondering the netting is to keep the roots from growing into eachother. They have also served the purpose of holding up the lid... I cut so much of it out, I don't think it would have held my big plants by itself. Next grow I am going to cut a peice of pvc the height of the lid for better support (pillar).

Hey... Good set up... but I question the 4 gallon res. I have 2 plants in a similar 10 gallon tote... which only holds approx 6.5 gallons of H2O + Nutes, and things are getting cramped. My girls suck down about 1/2 gallon a day. The roots alone would fill a 4 gallon tote. I veg'ed my plants for 5 weeks under cfl's and they are bushy and heavy. They are under a 400W HPS 12/12 now. One actually fell through the hole last night and I had to add duct tape around my net pot. They are gaining weight as well. I would move up to a 10 gallon tote minimum and save the 4 gallon res. as a clone tank. That is what i used with awesome results. Attached is a pic of my girls... 2 weeks ago in the veg room. They have doubled in size since and growing like mad. I raise the light every day.
Good Luck.

I like the net idea, i was think about the same thing for my next grow since one of my males got caught up with the roots of my female, remeved them with no problem but it was a big concern, how is it workin out? I'll stop by your thread once im offf of work haha, im addicted to rollitup, on my phone right now bongsmilie

but keep us posted vape, can wait to this go down, im here for the long run homie :leaf:

thanks for the pics and help guys. Im a little concerned too, which is why im wondering if it would be a bad idea to take nicely rooted clones and put them directly into 12/12. The clones have just rooted, but i can add them when the roots are a few inches long (leave them in the aero-cloner)

what do you think?

sicc, i say it all the time, but htis time im actually going to go through with it. LOL!
